Resorts within 2 hours of Raleigh/Chapel Hill/Durham

Looked into Pinehurst. Looks very nice, but no golfers going. If you’ve been there, are there “grounds” or anything else to do if you’re not a golfer?

Hoping to find someplace with good food, nice grounds, nice rooms. Historic/Classic is our taste. A lake for non-motor boating or just “gazing” would be nice! Going in August. Don’t want to go to Outerbanks (too far, too close to Hurricane time.) Older relative is paying…so…no significant budget limitations!

Thanks for the suggestion, but hoping to go a little further from Chapel Hill…so I’ll clarify…1-2 hours from Chapel Hill/Raleigh/Durham. Looking for a resort…not just a hotel/B&B

We just went to a wedding at The Umstead in Cary. I don’t know whether that meets your resort criteria, but it was lovely. It is adjacent to a state park and you can rent bikes.

Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, and Figure Eight Island are all a bit over 2 hours from Raleigh, but most of the route is on I-40, so it is a relatively easy drive.

Figure Eight Island is a private, very upscale venue close to Wilmington. There are private houses for rent (no condos or hotels!), a yacht club on the island for dining, swimming, boating, etc. And, you would be close to Wilmington – which has some historic homes, decent restaurants, etc.

Wrightsville Beach is also a nice beach. There are houses for rent, but also hotels… I haven’t been there in a few years, but Shell Island Resort is in a nice beachfront location. It has small suites, pool, etc. From what I hear, it could use some updating, but still a great location.

Not sure if any of this “fits” your needs (admittedly, it is a little farther than you had wanted to drive), but some folks don’t realize how close Raleigh is to some NC beaches.

Duke University?

A smiley face wouldn’t be enough characters…but Xiggi made me smile!

“Could us a little updating” is not quite what the paying member of this trip had in mind…but I’ll still look into it.

Most of the nicer places will be in the mountains, at the beaches or in Charlotte.
