Restaurant close to Newark airport?

Friends have a long layover July 1 at EWR returning from Europe, our only chance to see them since last year. Flight arrives at 2 PM, continuing flight not until 9. We plan to pick them up, go somewhere for leisurely very early summer. Any ideas or suggestions within 10-20 mile radius?

Tripadvisor recommends Sol-Mar, a Portuguese place. Makes sense because there are lots of Portuguese people in Newark.

[Sol-Mar Restaurtant Reviews - 30 Restaurant Reviews - TripAdvisor](http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g46671-d559658-Reviews-Sol_Mar_Restaurtant-Newark_New_Jersey.html)

I agree with the Portuguese idea. My memory has faded, but as a native New Yorker, I can tell you that there is an area of Newark that is famous for its Portuguese restaurants.

Massive portions. Great food. Lively atmosphere.

Ironbound section of Newark is where all the Portuguese restaurants are. Just off Eisenhower Parkway (Route 21) Don Pepe’s the one I remember from growing up (and it’s right on Route 21) but I haven’t been there in well over 25 years.

ETA: Just saw the 10-20 mile radius. Certainly a “real” diner could be a possibility like the TOPS Diner: http://www.thetopsdiner.com/</a> or the Arlington Diner in North Arlington (just off Route 21)
If you’re looking for a steak, Steve’s Sizzling Steaks in Carlstadt used to be one of our go to places but it’s at the end of your driving range (17 miles) http://www.stevessizzlingsteaks.com/</a></p>

This is a restaurant my in-laws have frequented for years, they have taken us there also:

[Spanish Tavern](http://www.spanishtavernnewark.com)

If they land at Newark from an international flight, they will need to clear customs & immigration there. That could take up to an hour depending on the lines.

Agree that the traditional, authentic Newark meal is Spanish/Portuguese. Don Pepe & Spanish Tavern are the 2 oldest and most famous, however in my experience, they are tired.

Friends of friends own this place. We went to a private party there a few years ago and it was excellent. Not on Ferry Street, so you are only getting locals.

Dinosaur BBQ just opened in Newark next to the Prudential Center…awesome…and they take reservations (unlike the other branches of this icon in upstate New York)

It is walking distance to Newark Penn Station which has direct trains to the airport…(sorry if that info is a repeat of other posts)

Oops…you’re picking them up…regardless, go to Dinosaur; you won’t be disappointed…

You don’t have to go to Newark for dinner just because it is Newark Airport. Summit and Millburn are 15-20 min away, both of those towns have very good restaurants.

[Restaurant Serenade | 973-701-0303 | Chatham, New Jersey](http://www.restaurantserenade.com/)
is very nice and it is at the end of Rt 24 in Chatham.

Montclaire has very good restaurants, but I am not familiar with them.

If you’re going to Montclair, reservations are a must!!..

Osterio Giotto

So many more…

Roots in Summit…take out a second mortgage…haha

Same with Serenade. Amazing wine list. It is a pretty restaurant. I like their bar menu better.

When I used to live in NJ, I was always amazed by their prices, not cheaper than NY, and definitely not as good.

If we are going to recommend places outside of Newark, I will put a plug in for another local place that I know the owners. (kids are classmates w the owners). They always rank in top 20 restaurants in NJ. Only 15-20 minutes to EWR.

[Verjus Restaurant - Fine French cuisine. Located in Maplewood, NJ.](http://verjusrestaurant.com/)

Only issue is they don’t open until 5:30pm.

Agree that Basilico is good, however, the noise level is way too high for a meal to catch up with friends you haven’t seen in a year.

Don Pepe’s is a shell of its former self, imho…

Try Fornos, here is a link

Agree with Oldfort; there are some very nice restaurants in the small suburban town of Milburn NJ. Less than 20 miles and a straight shot along I-78 westbound from Newark Airport.

The portugese restaurants in Newark are great, but they wont be fast. Sol y Mar is a little harder to get to than the others. Figure, with a 2 pm arrival, you wont get out of customs and out of the airport for at least an hour…last time it took DS almost 2!

My cousins treated me to dinner at the Valenca Restaurant in Elizabeth last time I visited them. It’s a Portuguese steakhouse with seafood and other excellent selections too. Very much enjoyed the meal and evening. Restaurant is located a short distance south of Newark airport.
