restaurant recs for San Antonio and Pasadena?

Are the restaurants on the Riverwalk touristy ripoffs or are there decent Tex Mex places? We love a good margarita, too. Also on to Pasadena, Ca…any recs of any type of cuisine there? Thanks!

I always recommend [Welcome to Pie 'n Burger](<a href=“Pie 'N Burger”>http://www.pienburger.com/) for Pasadena. It’s a hole in the wall that hasn’t changed in 50 years, but it’s great.

Here ya go. http://www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com/ourmembers/Food_Drink/index.asp</a></p>

I like Boudro’s a bunch. I go to El Mercado for Mexican (Mi Tierra for me , too!!) not Riverwalk but not far.

dke,

I can’t say how the Tex-Mex restaurants on the Riverwalk are because there are so many good ones elsewhere in SA. Mi Tierra is one you should try.

I’m not sure if you would have any reason to be on the Caltech campus, but I had an excellent meal there.

On the Riverwalk in SA, we usually go to Casa Rio for pretty authentic Tex Mex or County Line for BBQ. Mi Tierra is classic Tex Mex at the Market Square which is within walking distance or take the free shuttle from the Riverwalk.

^Good point noimagination - Chandler Cafe at Caltech is excellent. My kids still rave about their pizza, while I had a piece of grilled salmon that was cooked perfectly.

Thanks guys, you’re the greatest!

On the Riverwalk, Casa Rio was decently good - I do remember though, a restaurant a little farther down (on the ground level - not too far from the Life Is Good store on the 2nd level) had the BIGGEST margaritas I had ever seen!! The Iron Cactus boasts award winning margaritas. [Austin Mexican Restaurant and Tequila Bar - Iron Cactus of Austin Dallas and San Antonio](http://www.ironcactus.com) Both of these would be on the same side of the river as Casa Rio.

A great meal that we enjoyed (but was Italian) was one of our last meals there - at a restaurant semi-attached to our hotel - Paesanos - across from the mall semi-attached to the Marriott - great complimentary bruschetta and good, affordable classic Italian.

There are lots of good restaurants in Pasadena, you might tell us what type of food so we can focus on a few hundred.A few good options: Saladang or Saladang Song for Thai. If you want to spend a lot of money on a Michelin starred restaurant try the tiny Tre Venezia. For inexpensive French standards try Cafe Bizou. For the best sushi in So Cal, you need to head down Huntington to Yoshida. If you like Indian, there are three good options in Old Town. (look on Yelp) And Mathmom is right re Pie n Burger!

Pasadena–on Lake Street, The Corner Bakery.
Old Town: Matsuri Japanese, Yoshinoya, New Delhi Palace, Luna Negra, Heidar Baba, Rapunzel’s

I also like The Cigar Bar and Fish Market

Marston’s for breakfast in Pasadena. They will allow you to get a half order of the macademia nut pancakes or the cornflake-encrusted french toast. Even better (but a bit further afield), head down to South Pasadena and Julienne’s.

If you’d be willing to drive into Hollywood (or take the metro), there’s the Velvet Margarita Cantina, which has a fabulous margarita and a rather dramatic interior decoration scheme.

Hey bookworm—What is Rapunzels? When I do a search I only come up with a hair salon. (always on the lookout for something new and different)

Also, I need to give a rec for good new restaurant opened by a friend —Slaw Dogs on 720 N Lake. http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-slaw-dogs-pasadena</a>
yummy hot dogs and a great beer and wine list.

MM
Sorry about Rapunzel’s. I guess I have the name confused. Baldwin’s is the fish place we went to several times. They have great selection of beer. Corner Bakery was our usual lunch place.

Pasadena…Louise’s Trattoria…I was there 2 weeks ago. Excellent!

[Louise’s Trattoria](http://www.louises.com)

dke= take a little break from the SA Riverwalk and go to Mi Tierra. Have the Enchiladas Verdes (green chicken enchiladas), a margarita, some hand made tortillas and pick up a sweet cookie for later on in the hotel.

yum

Burger Continental in Pasadena has great food, and great entertainment.

[Welcome to Burger Continental.](http://www.burgercontinentalpasadena.com/home.html)

Zuni Grill on the San Antonio Riverwalk has very good food and generously-spiked margaritas. (Yum!) County Line BBQ was good and, if you sit right next to the River, offers a wonderful setting for chowing down. Even though people were walking close by, we felt like we were in our own little garden.
