I have cousin (married) moving to CH for grad school. I want to get them GC for good place for food/takeaway/coffee or similar. What are some cool places? Leaning toward something like Weavers st, Fosters or Southern Seasons…thoughts?

There is always Starbucks

Panzanella (in the same shopping center as Weaver St.) is a nice and kind of upscale restaurant. Elmos Diner is not at all fancy but always delicious. Top of the Hill is a Chapel Hill classic. Sugarland is a fabulous bakery.

Panzanella is bland and pretentious, IMHO.
Top of the hill has fairly decent food, but it’s not foodie by any means.

A southern season is good if a bit overpriced.
Elaine’s is excellent.
I like Tallulah’s but I know not everyone does.

The food scene in Durham is excellent.

Southern Season is a great place for a gift certificate. The restaurant is good and the store is even better. It is a fun place to shop, with a huge array of kitchen items, cookware, dishes, wine, candy, cookies, gourmet snack food, bakery, prepared food, flowers, etc.

Fosters is nice for a lunch or coffee (and closest to campus of the 3 places you mention), and Weaver St. is a great organic food market. All good choices.
