It’s driving me crazy!
Don’t know(suspect) it is caused by medication. But it came on suddenly and now is even occurring in the morning.
I haven’t had much luck with my remedies. Epsom salt bath, jumping up &down, next I may try medical marijuana- don’t want another med that is going to cause even more side effects.

Anyone else dealt successfully with this? I need every second of sleep I can get and this isn’t helping. :(

Emeraldkity4- I would suspect it is medication driven. My oldest suffered with it when she was on a lot of meds for depression and anxiety. I think they gave her another med to lessen the effect. She has since gotten off most meds and the restless leg syndrome is gone. Good luck.

Daily magnesium and a few bananas a week keep me from getting this. The only time I’ve ever had it during the day is when we are on long international flights and I don’t get up and walk around the plane a lot. Do you sit at a desk all day? If so, it’s important to get up every hour and walk for a few minutes. One of the worse things you can do for your health is to sit non-stop for hours on end.

I do a * lot of yardwork* as well as other active stuff so no to the sitting- but I could be iron deficient as that is a cause- also it can be genetic & while my mother did have it, I assumed it was connected to her meds- maybe it wasn’t?

I will try the bananas & pay more attention to my calcium/magnesium ( which I should be doing anyway)

Im not on that many medications- no antidepressants but I am on an antipsychotic which can have neuro effects- although I am on smallest dose possible & it isn’t known for side effects.

I have an idea- my H has a heavy duty massager which I don’t use because the vibration is annoying- but it might help.

I had it during pregnancy, and it went away afterward. I’m guessing it may have been a nutritional deficiency, I had morning sickness through most of it.

I had it during pregnancy and have it occasionally still. My youngest D has it too. I think the massager might help. My D and I will rub or punch each others shins (as weird as that sounds). Mine is due to medication, I think. If the med is new for you, it might be a temporary side effect.

Mine always acts up when my iron is getting low, even if not in anemic ranges. There are slow-release iron tablets out there which aren’t too bad. Three-four days after getting back on them and my symptoms go away. What I need to do is keep taking them and not slack off after a few weeks.

I always thought restless leg syndrome was a joke. At least my DH thought it was a joke when he’d see the commercials on tv… Then my students made fun of how much I twitch my legs and I stopped laughing. I’d be sitting there reading a book to them (being 3rd graders) and they’d start counting how many times I’d twitch my toes. I notice I’ve completely destroyed my shoes too. Is this restless leg syndrome?

I think it depends on why you twitch. Is it a nervous thing or do you have the sensation that you just have to move your foot or leg? Some people describe it as having a creepy crawly feeling in their legs. My experience is a feeling like I NEED to do leg lifts, knee bends, etc. Like my legs want to run even when i don’t. It is more common at times of rest or inactivity and, for me, it is more pronounced at night on the couch at the end of the day. Fortunately, I don’t have it in bed.

It’s not a creey, crawly feeling, but I twitch or squeeze my toes or swing my feet because it seems I have too much energy. I do it without thinking. Like i want to run, as you said, even when I don’t. I don’t do this feeling when I sleep, fortunately. What is the difference between this and “nervous energy”?

my legs hurt deep- all the time, but muscle not bone. ( I also have fibromyalgia & arthritis) They feel like they need to be stretched, like they don’t have good circulation. I shake them and they feel a little better but that just seems to be temporary while I am doing it. I constantly have to rotate my feet and stretch my calves. It also is during the day, but it is getting worse. At night I had to sleep in Ds room so I wouldnt disturb H.

I don’t really know the difference between restless legs and nervous energy except that, uually, when I have restless legs I don’t feel nervous. My D, who also ha it, also ha the “jimmy” leg thing. Always bouncing the leg. It’s not the same thing, though. Restless legs are a sensation in the legs themselves, not a result of overall anxiety or nervousness.

When i was a kid I suffered terribly from “growing pains” in my legs. They would usually strike at night and would wake me up with a deep aching in and around the knee and thigh muscles. Horrible. My mom would come in and give me aspirin. My D got them too. A lot! Sometimes pressure would help and I would go and press on her legs during the night until the tylenol kicked in. I have since found out that these “growing pains” are from changes in the growth plate of the knee. Weird. You would think I would have made it to at least 5’2" considering the amount of my discomfort growing up!

Anyway, i wonder if there is a connection between growing pains and restless legs.

FWIW, I had restless leg syndrome but also had severe obstructive sleep apnea. Once I was treated for the sleep apnea & started getting a decent night’s sleep, the RLS magically disappeared.

Many schools of thought as to the cause of RLS, but in my case it was brain-triggered, not muscular.

I tend to get it when I fly, or when my legs are cold (even though I don’t really perceive them to be). When I put on long socks, and bundle up, it tends to dissipate somewhat. And I second the banana advise.

I remember reading somewhere that RLS can be diminished by standing on a cold surface. Of course, it is better not to have to get out of bed in the middle of the night. I very, very rarely will be bothered by leg cramps and last Saturday night I had a case. I stood in my bare feet on our slate floor in our foyer for about 2 minutes and had no problem going back to sleep. Not a permanent solution but it might help.

let’s hope not cause my H would divorce me. ( he was fixed some time ago) !
I am going to try the standing on a cold surface.
Im also going for a massage tomorrow.

my medication I am supposed to take at night on an empty stomach ( decreases absorption). The night I had the worst of it, I must have taken it too close to snacking- last night I made sure I took it a good two hours after eating & I didn’t have any trouble, let’s just hope I remember that!
