so while yesterday i checked my ucb decisions and planned to commit there, i got some really good news today. cornell is now also an option (was too scared to check on ivy day)!!
i was wondering if i should choose ucb or cornell or engineering. ik that cornell as an ivy elague, but berkely is currently ranked higher. im not sure what to do and am planning to visit both
Of the Ivy League colleges, Cornell has the strongest engineering.
So…now you really need to consider other factors…like the weather. Are you loving the idea of Ithaca winters? How about ease to travel home? Small town, or large city? Start looking at the soft characteristics…because the academics are very good at both.
Great that you can visit both schools. Assuming they are both comfortably affordable (no hardship, no debt) then you have earned the right to go with your personal preference. This is a case where two reasonable people could make two different choices.
This is a tough one, because there are so many great things about either. On the other hand, there is no bad choice here. Berkeley and Cornell are equivalent in rank, and no employer or grad school would consider one of them to be “better”. There is no difference between the two in the quality of academics, in the opportunities for graduates, or in the perceived “prestige”.
So your choice will come down, to personal preferences.
Since you are a CA resident, my tendency is to recommend Berkeley, because it would likely be cheaper, and most California residents may find the weather at Cornell to be uncomfortable. CA residents who come from one of the large urban areas of CA may find Cornell to be relatively isolated. On the other hand, upstate New York can be pretty beautiful, especially for people who like the full four seasons, with fall foliage, etc.
There are some differences in resources, since Cornell is mostly private, but on the other hand, Berkeley, as one of the two state flagships is pretty well resourced.
I recommend that you visit both to get a feeling for each.
