DS walked at his college graduation last June - but he had several incompletes to finish up. He’s finally done with the course work (well, I hope I’m not jumping the gun as he’s waiting to see his grades for 2 classes, he will have completed the course work as long as he passes both classes). He’s now ready to start his job search. Any suggestions as to how he show his degree on his resume? I’m assuming he should note that the work is completed but the degree will be awarded in June 2011 but I’m not sure how this would look on his resume. His university only issues diplomas once a year so he won’t have his diploma until June. Will not having the diploma be an issue with employers since he won’t be able to show it to them until June?

I wouldn’t expect most employers would be interested in seeing his diploma - that’s something for him to hang on the wall. What’s of interest to employers is the transcript which should indicate his graduation status as well as the courses taken and grades received. It seems that his transcript will indicate that he ‘met all graduation requirements’ fairly right away (he can check with the registrar’s office on this). They may not even care to see the transcript but just check with the college to see if he truly graduated in his stated major.

Given this, he can just indicate on his resume that he graduated with a particular degree from the college (but he needs to check with the registrar’s office first to be certain of his status).

One thing I would suggest is to include some minor but important information right up in front. For example, if he is US Citizen he should include an item called employment eligibility: US Citizen.

Unless he has lots of experience, keep resume to 1 page. I have seen many resumes several pages long, but with useless long description of stuff.

Howdy OLM,
Several friends of my son graduated in 4.5 years. They began work in research labs and applied for grad school the following fall. As you know, my son took a hiatus for 2 years.
Does your son plan to stay in NorCal? He seems very serious about g/f

University X, City, State Abbreviation August, 200x-June, 2011
name degree, Bachelor of X (all course requirements completed-conferred June, 2011)

Employers actually contact college/university registrar offices to confirm. He would need to make sure he lets an employer know about it being conferred in June, 2011 during an interview in addition to being on his resume. The registrar will confirm his receiving the degree June, 2011 and that he has met all requirements.

woosah, thanks, for showing how to show it on his resume!

yes, bookworm, he hopes to stay in NorCal. Gf is very serious about the relationship. Its hard to tell if DS is as serious or if its just that he’s anxious about finding work and supporting himself and is worried he’ll end up supporting GF as well. Hope all is well for you and yours!
