Resume killing internship opportunities?

I am currently a junior MIS student at a major university in Texas. I’ve been applying to numerous companies offering IT/IS internships through my college career center. I have gotten interviews with only 4 companies so far, out of around 20 applications. Some are with fairly big companies (Protiviti) and others with major companies (PWC, ExxonMobil). But the vast majority of companies have rejceted me for an interview for an internship. I have a pretty good GPA (3.50), so I’m thinking my lack of invitations is connected to my resume.

I only have one work experience–this past summer I worked at Macy’s as a shoe expeditor, so I would bring out/organize the shoes in the back of the store. I have one officer position–secretary for my university’s chapter of a national collegiate honor society. Everything else is volunteer work, most of which is working with underprivileged children (mentoring middle-shcool kids once a week, entertaining homeless kids certain nights for a few months). I also still have volunteer experience the summer before I started college at a children’s hospital listed.

What other things should I be doing to improve my resume? I know leadership is important, but I have had a hard time getting elected to anything (took me a while just to get the secretary position). What else can I do at this point to imporve my resume?

Your a junior with absolutely no relevant work experience. Your starting to look like damaged goods… your resume could also be poorly formatted I’ve noticed that 99.9% of people have no idea how to write a resume and 75% of career centers are no help whatsoever.

how do your interviews go? it sounds like you have some good prospects. You aren’t going to get an interview offer every time you send in your resume.

Well I got a second office visits from Protiviti and potentially PwC later this month, so I guess the first round went well.

Why don’t you look into a service that can help you with your resume, like All in 1 Applications. They have a free resume builder that can make sure it looks good. Also offer some services for editing. I used it for my daughter and thought it made a big difference.

Your resume doesn’t sound like a problem to me if you have been getting call backs from some very nice companies already!

4/20 isn’t bad if you’re just doing resume drops; It’s hard to really stand out until you’ve had your first internship. Since you’re in MIS, you could list any computer related hobbies you have. I have one co-worker that really likes people with programming skills, especially if they learned them as a hobby.
