I just got my June SAT scores and I scored a 2320 (800 CR, 780 M, 740 W–w/ a 9 essay–ouch!). It was my first time taking the test and I’m a sophomore. I’m wondering if I should take the test again (really rather not) or just try the ACT instead…will it matter that I’m looking to go into journalism/writing and I scored worst on the writing section?? Thanks!!

retake is useless, unless for some awards. better try your luck at act.

I am still baffled as to how people score 2300s and still get single digits on the essay. I got an 1870 with a 12 on the essay. If you want to get a perfect writing score, then just learn to ace the essay - it’s the easiest part of the test.

Since you’re a sophomore, I guess you could retake and aim for a perfect. If you exhausted all of your good practice tests, then you might want to try the ACT for kicks. In my opinion, the effort spent on getting the 80 points on the SAT would be better spent working hard for a competition.

No. Do not retake. For only being a sophomore, a 2320 is a GREAT score. Seriously, 80 points will not make a difference. Spend your time doing something worthwhile, like WhaleWhale said, working hard for a competition. And if you think your writing score will hurt your chances, then spend your time studying for the Literature Subject Test and try to get a perfect score on that. You should be lucky because most people don’t have it like you.

Don’t retake. You’re a sophomore - a 2320 is EXTREMELY good not only for a sophomore, but for any grade. The national average is ~1500. You’re already 820 points above that. Congratulations!

Have fun, don’t worry about tests. You have a 2320. Anything above 2300 is good enough for any school in the nation.

So then it doesn’t matter that I want to go into a writing-related career yet my writing score was lackluster?

^No, as long as your EC’s and essays show that you’re strong in writing.

You should take the PSAT as a junior though, for NMS

nah, if i were you, RETAKE IT! you’re seriously settling for just that???
weird

some people get 2400 and they can’t even get into harvard…

How can a person who gets 2320 create a thread like this?

you probably just had some hardass read your essay and give it a 4/6…

You’re a sophomore. There’s absolutely no problem with retaking.

@Very Practical: maybe those people with 2400’s can’t get into Harvard because they don’t have what Harvard is looking for. It has nothing to do with the person’s SAT score. Maybe they don’t have enough EC’s, or they’re too “perfect.” Plus, like i said there is practically no difference between 2320 and 2400.

OP, You’re a sophomore so you obviously have alot of time. But use that time to do bigger things. After high school, SAT’s score don’t even matter. So, spend your time wisely. And if that means getting that perfect 2400, then so be it. But i’m telling you, it will make little to no difference. Obviously you’ll be entitled to bragging rights, but that only lasts for a while. Telling people you scored a 2320 as a sophmore is almost the same if not better than saying you scored a 2400 as a junior. But do take the PSAT your junior year, and get a 240on that.
