Retake SAT with low GPA or use old low SAT score?

Hello,

My only score is from three years ago. It’s a 1590/2400. My GPA was about a 2.8/4.0. I dropped out and got a GED back then. Would retaking the SAT and getting something like a 1300+/1600(new SAT) at this point help me over the cliff in any way into a decent state university(Ohio State, Penn State, Twin Cities, University of Washington etc), or would universities just look at my low GPA and old SAT score and bin my application?

At most schools you can choose which scores to send. I would take the new SAT.

If your old score (which will be 4 yrs old by the time you apply, yes?) don’t help you, then yes, retake. IIRC, scores are valid for 5 years, so be sure to check the date of administration.

The real hurdle will be can you score +1300 on the new SAT. That would be in the high 90s percentile-wise (vs your earlier score which was approximately in the 60th percentile). What’s changed from when you were in HS? I can understand the verbal going up but the math portion resembles lots of what you encountered as a HS freshman and sophomore. You really need to do lots of practice in order for such a dramatic rise. Good luck to you.

Also, be sure these schools will accept a GED. Many will not, though some will after 5 years.

Agreed with the above advice. I would be surprised if UWash took an OOS applicant with a 2.8, not sure that the others would.

As an aside, U Washington is using only the coalition application this year.

Also, please look at the cost of the colleges. Right now you have public Us from four different states listed. You’d be paying out of state rates at three of them (at least).
