I have to retake a college course for the third time in my 4-yr university. I understand that starting in Fall 2009, many universities came with a policy that no student can’t retake the same course for the third time. I’ve never ended up in this situation. Thankfully I can petition to retake it in my university.

The question is, is it a good idea to take it again in a 4-yr university or take the same course in a community college and why?

Unless you have a compelling reason to do otherwise, I would take the course at the university you are currently at. Why are you considering to take it elsewhere?

What happened in 2009? I am not aware of a standardized policy regarding course repeats.

At my school there’s an extra fee applied if you retake a course more than once, but you’re definitely allowed to do so. If you want to take advantage of some kind of grade forgiveness policy then it’s probably best to take it at your own university if possible.

I think you’re confusing a few things about retaking a class (even multiple times).

You typically can’t retake a class “with grade forgiveness” more than once. So if you are retaking it for the 3rd time, chances are at least one of the other D’s or F’s will remain on your transcript.

The other situation is taking a class more than two times, which typically triggers a surcharge by many universities. Sometimes it’s 1.5 times the credit rate, other times it’s double.

Depends why you’re re-taking it for the 3rd time…is the course content too difficult? Did you just have really bad professors? Did you have personal problem or work too much to study the first 2 times? The reasons for re-taking it will help you decide whether to re-take it at the same uni (though possibly with the same or different prof, depending how good/bad the prof was), vs. taking it at a community college where you might be able to score higher. But not all CCs have easy courses/profs, either, contrary to popular belief. So consider why you need to re-take it, and what will be different this time that will help you to pass it.
