Retaking courses before transferring--good or bad?

I am currently in my second year of college out of high school. I was a part-time Running Start student and didn’t do very well, so I decided to retake a few courses that I didn’t do very well in in order to boost my GPA and chances of transfer acceptance.

There are two courses that I have had a very hard time in…one I will probably retake for the sixth time, and one a third time. I have withdrawn in each class and failed each class as well. There are also a few courses that I am considering retaking or auditing. I know this already sounds bad, but I am planning on talking to my adviser about it and a transfer adviser at my desired University. I had been struggling heavily with mental illness, suicidal ideation, and am still finding the right treatment. I have gone through different medications and therapists, had a few trips to the ER when I was impulsively going to end my life, and am still trying to figure out what helps me best. Along with these personal struggles, I have also had family issues including the death of my cousin (whom is also my best friend) and my father’s heart attack, which both caused a deeper depression and longer recovery.

My current therapist told me that universities prefer to see audited courses over retakes.

Is this true? What is recommended/what looks best?

Your advisor is the best person to help you with the grade issue.

But to be perfectly honest, until you get your mental health on track, you should not be thinking about transferring. You want to be in your own best shape before you tackle a new place!
