My spouse is a few years older than me and is retired. We both get retirement medical benefits through his (previous) employer. When he becomes 65 and has to go on Medicare, will my medical benefits from the company be terminated? This may be company specific, but if you have any insight, please share. Thanks.
The only way to know if for you to contact the former employer, unless any of the written material presented to him when he retired describes the entitlements earned.
Some employers will continue to cover retiree widows, even after their former retired employee passes away.
Most plans now, however, include language indicating they reserve the right to amend/terminate the program at any time, with XX months notice, etc.
Congratulations, though, to both you and your husband.
For my company, the spouse stayed on retirees’ insurance when the employee went on Medicare.
I’ll be facing this next year. My husband is retired Army Reserve so we are on Tricare. I will continue to be covered and he will have to purchase Part B in order to continue his coverage. I think Tricare serves as Medigap coverage for him but I’m not sure. The info on the Tricare website reads like it does, but the Medicaid website states that Tricare for Life is not Medigap.
Generally, a company will keep you on their coverage even though your husband goes on Medicare. Obviosuly, as others have said, you need to check with the company. I’ve been a benefits director at numerous companies and that’s how it always worked.
My H is a retired fed employee. He and I are covered for life under his policy, even if he dies before I do. We can keep the plan even while on Medicare A and B and it generally means no copays for him (and me after I am 65), as long as we keep paying our share of the premiums. Agree with checking with the HR of employer and reading your policy and HR materials on the subject.
Ask the company. You may have to inform it anyway, since the policy may change (e.g. to a Medicare supplement policy) after the retiree becomes Medicare eligible.
Ask the company. That’s the only way to know.
TriCAre has been covered by UHC. In November, Humana takes over. In my state, this means HUGE cuts for mental health services once Humana takes the reins.
So, when you inquire about your benefits, ask who will be running the medical side of Tri-care
We’re in the eastern region - I’ll have to check on that. Thank you.
Definitely depends on the company. You need to check with his employer, H (and I) had retirement health insurance that covered us until he turned 65 and then 36 months more for me. Don’t know what I will do for the 2 months before I can be on Medicare next year. It all depends what the rules are at the time.
Will check with company. Thanks for all of the input!
My H has family medical insurance benefits from his former insurer that we can keep for the rest of our lives, even tho he is on Medicare A and B. His employer pays 75% of the premium and we pay the balance.
I agree that the HR should be able to let you know whether the retired employee can retain the policy and what options are available.
