For anyone who has returned a leased car – how strict are they about inspecting and charging for wear and tear? I have to return a vehicle in a few weeks and would rather not incur exorbitant charges for scratches. They have told me that they won’t charge for anything that is just a surface scratch on the paint and is less than 6 inches. I have one small but very noticeable one from where a shopping cart ran into my car at a parking lot. I’m considering touching it up and buffing it out, so they can’t possibly make an issue of it and find a way to charge me.

Is this worthwhile? I dont want to turn a minor problem that they may not care about into a major issue by messing with the paint job. Thoughts?
