We ended up having to leave much earlier than we thought so my mom is attempting to return today.

I hope your mom is successful with some returns. It is not tacky to return gifts you do not need/will not use. I always try to buy something from the registry. If they don’t have a registry, I attach a gift receipt. The only duplicates D received were easily returned for store credit. Most were from her registry stores, but a few were not. You could auction the remaining gifts off here on CC.
