Returning gifts- no receipt, no idea which store they came from

I have to return some of my wedding gifts as 1- I can’t fit them in my car to go home and 2- I already have many duplicates of the things I was given. Unfortunately, no one included a gift receipt and I have no idea which store they came from.

I know that there are stores that will do a store credit or some other exchange if they carry the product… I’m just not sure what they are. Any ideas?

If I can’t return them, they’re getting donated. We don’t have the space or need for them :frowning:

And please- no one call this tacky or anything like that.

Can you re-gift them to someone else who is getting engaged or married?

I bet if you described them here, we could figure out which stores they are from
I think Target and Walmart are both pretty good about taking things back for store credit (although, they will give you the lowest recent sale price that they can get away with).

Romani, first of all congrats! I bet you were beautiful (both of you!)

First of all, you can download an app that lets you scan the UPC and then it will tell you stores that sell that product. I think this one would work: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/quick-scan-barcode-scanner/id446067710?mt=8

Secondly, if you think that a Walmart or something might sell the item, I’d try them or a similar store - except Target - they are pretty fussy on returns. Only thing, is you might need to only take a couple of things and send multiple people in to return - and be willing to then get a gift card to that store. (not cash back)

What kind of items ? You don’t have to share, but I thought maybe stating what something is might prompt someone to tell you who might sell it.

Were you registered at any store? You might start there…

You can probably type the barcode into your search engine and see what they are selling for at your local stores. Then pick where to return them

** oops didn’t see abasket had the same recommendation!

Or… you can send them to my DS!!

If you can’t return then maybe sell on ebay instead of donate.

Or…and this may not be kosher…you could ask the person who gave you the gift, explain the duplication and ask where they purchased it or if they have the receipt and feel comfortable giving it to you…

…This is coming from someone who tends to be blunt and not worry about hurt feelings so take this advice with a grain of salt.

Also, congratulations!!! Your wedding looked very fun and laid back.

Thanks, everyone. One is a set of Farberware (sp?) knives and the other is a Classic 5 Qt Crock-Pot… Unfortunately we already have 3 complete set of knives (2 of which have never been opened) and 2 crockpots (which we never, ever use… radically different diets and all that).

Thank you, @abasket - for both the compliment and the app. I’ll definitely look it up.

I’d be completely fine with an in-store card!

Oops- didn’t see the rest of the comments before I responded.

We didn’t register anywhere because we knew that we would not have room to take any gifts home. We live 4 hours away from where we were married. The gifts are currently at my parents’ house (where we were married) but they’re renting out their house for a month starting next week so we can’t keep them there either. (The house renting thing is a long story.) They will be coming to stay with us during that time but they also simply do not have room to take them down state. Therefore, hard to keep until the next wedding or occasion :frowning:

If the gifts came from people on “my” side, I’d have no problem asking for a receipt. Unfortunately, they come from my H’s side and the parents would be horrified if we asked for a receipt. There are already issues going on there and I’d prefer not to rock the boat.

I understand completely… good luck. I would second the advice for using the app to find out the store.

Congrats, looks like you had a wonderful day!

I think Kohl’s carries Farberware knives and may also have the crockpot. They will give you a store credit for exchanges without a receipt. I think the new BB&B policy is that exchanges without a receipt will have 20% deducted assuming that a coupon was used.

No suggestions just a big huge CONGRATUALTIONS!! It is funny how you get to “know” some posters and I have always thought you seemed like such an interesting cool young person. Best of everything to you both!!

Congratulations… now, are you going to stick around long enough so we can hear about your first pregnancy? You can’t leave us hanging. (and God knows some of us have demonstrated we’re not interested in leaving this site even years after our kids have graduated college)

LOL

Probably. But it’s not happening any time soon! (Though I can’t tell you how many people came up and asked us when we were planning on having kids…)

I’ll ideally not have a child for about 3 years or so. I’m 24 now and I’m hoping for sometime in later 20s.

If it was something Costco carries, they’re also excellent at returns without receipts, for store credit. They sometimes carry Faberware knives and some crockpots–check Costco.com to see and save yourself a trip if they don’t have the ones you received.

First of all, congrats on the wedding! I’ll bet that BB&B carries the Farberware knives.

No additional advice–just wanted to say congratulations on the wedding!

You’ve already gotten great advice on the returns. I just wanted to say I love your new avatar picture, and congratulations! (And no, it isn’t even remotely tacky to return your third crockpot or second set of whatever! Too bad they didn’t include a gift receipt, since obviously their goal was to give you something you could use. That is one advantage of a registry…)

Oh, and it never ends. When you have your first child, people will start asking you when you are having another!
