Reviews of Recent Concerts

I’m sure Rollins was great! Don’t see much jazz anymore (mainly because I don’t have anyone close who’d agree to accompany me), but remember seeing McCoy Tyner, Rahsaan Roland Kirk (each twice), Ornette Coleman, Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny (several times), Chick Corea & RTF, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Weather Report. I regret never seeing Miles, who is my all time favorite (acoustic and electric).

Herbie Hancock is playing at the zoo ( within walking distance) this summer</p>

My H doesn’t like jazz but for a concert I want to go to - Ive gone by myself.

AP,

I would have loved to see Roland Kirk on the reeds.

My parents saw Miles perform on his last concert tour, before death’s chariot swung low to carry him home. Glad I got to see Sonny.

…way to go EK4!

Here’s a topic:

Artists you’d like to see while they are still with us?

.

Its actually really fun to go out by yourself. I also have gone to outside “drive in” movies in the neighborhood ( actually walk up) I meet people I would never meet if I went with H, since he isn’t good with new people ( well neither am I, but people will approach you if you are by yourself- ).
One outside movie, the people I was sitting next to, shared their yummy food and their spiked rosemary lemonade :D

I have to admit- I am a huge Pearl Jam fan-
I will see them anyplace- my favorite is the Gorge and the Showbox.

Id really like to see Neil Young, thinking about going down for the Bridge concert- Ive also never seen BB King- if you can believe that.
( I did see Ella, Oscar, Count Basie and Joe Pass at the Paramount once- third row- there are perks to working at a record store)

I miss the WOMAD concerts at Marymoor, Bonnie Raitt was a regular and she is always one of my favorites.

Oh that reminds me- Robin Williams is doing a benefit tonight at the Showbox, I suppose I should see if they still ahve tickets?

Speaking of Herbie Hancock, did you know he is a Grinnell graduate?

EK if you make plans for the Bridge Concert some year, ping me – we’re right down the road and go some years.

Pulling this thread up from yesteryear, as we just returned from an Earth, Wind and Fire AND Chicago concert! Lots of fun! The lead singers voices from Chicago seemed to be showing their age a bit, but nonetheless, hearing those familiar voices was a real treat. E,W&F has three of the original group touring. Not sure how many of Chicago were original, but it seemed like 4 or 5 at least. Interesting that E,W&F seemed to be better able to get the crowd on its feet than Chicago did, but it was a great concert and the finale, with both bands playing and jamming together, was tremendous.

jym626 - I just saw Chicago on TV on Chris Isaac’s new show, and you’re right about the voices, however the music was tight as ever.

I just heard that Steely Dan is coming to LA in August for 4 “special set list” shows; Set list is one of three classic Steely Dan albums in its entirety …1st night Aja plus selected additional favorites; 2nd night Gaucho plus selected additional favorites; 3rd night The Royal Scam plus selected additional favorites; 4th night “Takin’ It To The Seats” Internet Request Night: Set list is determined by the internet votes of ticket-holders for that show.

This is a brilliant concept and as a Steely Dan fan from way back when it’s killing me to not be able to afford these shows. Alas. I will play these albums in their entirety plus selected additional favorites each night of the shows. :)

That Steely Dan 4 day show sounds great, justamom. Will you get to at least one night? I know the tix can be expensive, but you deserve it!

Here’s a snipitabout the Chicago/Earth Wind and Fire tour. It just started. Runs through the summer. The schedule is in this article. If any of you are fans of either group, try to catch it. It was a great evening [Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire map joint tour >> Tour dates and concert ticket info >> LiveDaily](http://www.livedaily.com/news/18376.html)

jym626 - if I did get to go, I’d have a hard time deciding which one. The album Aja holds extra special memories for me (all good) so I’d try for that I guess. Also the show is farther from me than I’d like, and it’s indoors. Last I saw Steely Dan was close to home in an amphitheater. Delicious. Summer concert outdoors is my cup of tea.

The Chicago/Earth Wind and Fire tour looks amazing. Did they ever get on stage together?

I saw both Neil Young and B.B. King concerts in 2008 and did not like either concert. B.B. and his band “phoned it in,” as my H put it. It was OK, but they all seemed tired and too old to be still touring. B.B. can still play and sing but it is quite an effort.

The Neil Young concert was HORRID and I spent a lot on the tickets. It was my birthday too and such a disappointment. We love his older music and play those CDs often. The entire concert was horribly loud rock or whatever he’s playing now. He only did three songs from the old days as a sort of token. We left long before it was over. Some people left after only a couple of songs.

My top concert recommendation is Smokey Robinson. We saw him at an outdoor concert and it was superb–one of the best concerts of any kind I have seen in my life. I would love to see him again. He is a master showman and had the whole crowd right in the palm of his hand. Wonderful experience.

Thanks for the heads up about Neil Young and Smokey Robinson, bookiemom!

Justamom-
Yes- the 2 groups do play together- a little bit during the show )EW&F joinde Chicago when Chicago played one of EW&F’s somgs) and then at the end, the last set was both groups together- playing songs and then jamming. It was INCREDIBLE!!

I saw Jersey Boys today. It was fun, but I liked the real bands last night better. The outdoor ampitheater was wonderful! I could have done without the girls behind us spilling their drinks all over my purse though…

Saw Fleetwood Mac about 6 weeks ago. They played all their old stuff. Did a terrific job. Lindsay Buckingham is an amazing guitar player…and he’s over 60 but thin as a rail with the energy of a 30 year old. Stevie Nicks voice started a slow off but got better as the show went on. Loved it.

saw fleetwood mac and agree about buckingham and nicks. good show. saw van morrison do most of astral weeks fantastic and he was in good form. saw springsteen a few weeks ago and while he gave it his all, it just didn’t do it for me this time. first saw him in 1976. saw Leonard cohen last week and was probably best concert i’ve ever seen and i’ve seen a lot.

Van Morrison is brilliant live. Saw him a few years back at The Hollywood Bowl. Smokey Robinson’s coming to the Pacific Amphitheater (next to the OC Fair) this summer, I hemmed and hawed. I will splurge, as I love a good show and love the venue. I have already splurged on tickets to see Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood at The Hollywood Bowl the end of this month. Saw Steve last summer and it was incredible. I just love good music. Period.

"Just"aMom: you will love Smokey’s concert! I am so glad I can recommend it to someone. He is just a wonderful entertainer–truly one of the best concerts I’ve seen. He sings lots of old songs from the 60s and he is still just great. He wrote a lot of the Motown songs, including many for other groups.

One of my sons had an apartment next to Sonny Rollins. We could hear him practice. He is a nice gentleman.

bookiemom - I’m very familiar with Smokey’s resume and musical catalog (we’re on first name basis now ;)). I ordered my ticket earlier this evening. I know I won’t regret it.

Have you ever seen the documentary - Standing in the Shadows of Motown, The Funk Brothers. It came out about 5 years ago and is a favorite of mine. I got to see the Funk Brothers (with Joan Osborne) at the same venue Smokey (my friend ;)) is playing.

I went to see Crosby, Stills and Nash last night. They were having a little trouble singing those higher range notes, but it was still fun to be part of the sold-out gray-haired crowd.
They had some new anti-war themed songs.

One of the best shows I have seen recently should be of interest to anyone who likes Smokey Robinson. Raphael Saadiq is a singer-multi-instrumentalist-producer who had a lot of success 15 years ago with Tony Toni Tone, and then with Lucy Pearl, and producing various popstars. He has a terrific album out called “The Way I See It”, which is something like a great lost Marvin Gaye album from the late '60s. He has the classic Motown sound and formula down pat, and his songwriting bears comparison to that of Robinson, Gaye, and “The Corporation”. Live, he is a stupendous, assured performer who works his butt off and really delivers, and everyone in his band/backups is up to snuff. We saw him in a large club (~800 people) and it was a great scene – all races, ages from teen to 60s, and everyone having a great time and dancing.
