Reviews of Recent Concerts

JHS - Raphael Saadiq isn’t playing anywhere near me, but I’m streaming him right now (100 Yard Dash from The Way I See It), I would most definitely like to see him perform!

About a year ago I saw Peter, Paul and Mary. How the years have flown! They performed all their standards. Mary has really bad mobility problems now.

Bookiemom–
Thanks to your suggestion, I just arranged a “ladies night out” with 2 friends to see Gladys Knight and Smoky Robinson! Waddya think??? The #&((%%)^_^ ticketmaster service charges and ancillary junk fees added 30% to the cost! Grrr…

Bookiemom-
Just wanted to give you a follow-up, as I just returned from the Smokey Robinson/Gladys Knight concert. I confess by the end of yesterday’s Michael Jackson funeral, I was beginning to say (in my head) … ok Smokey-- time to get on the &$#($_ plane back here for the concert!

It was a good concert, and a gorgeous night for an outdoor concert- with a few surprises. We were surprised that Gladys came on first. She had her name first and in bigger letters on the tix, so we thought she’d be considered the featured act and play second. No matter-- they were both good. Maybe Smokey was jet lagged and needed a littel more rest. Who knows. He seemed to be a little more sultry and melancholy at times than I’d expected (really slowed down several songs), and made one passing tribute to MJ, which, interestingly, didn’t get all that strong of a response. Also, Smokey and Gladys never sang together, which we thought they would at the end. Smokey was a bit overly theatrical at times and seemed to drag some things out, so perhaps, since this venue is in a residential area and there is a strict time/noise curfew, they ran out of time. Dunno.

It was a very enjoyable concert, and Smokey is in remarkable shape and quite sensual for his age. But… the all white, followed by all red outfit (complete with skin tight leather pants) were a bit much. The white shirt (under the white jacket) was translucent, and looked like it belonged on Tom Jones. The red leather/pleather pants looked like they should be the booth apholstery in Sinners Alley. Really-- too much. It was definitely a fun concert… but I liked the Chicago/Earth Wind and Fires one of a few weeks ago, better.

Oh, jym, sorry it wasn’t as great as the concert I went to. Perhaps he was jet-lagged or upset about MJ? He had nice costumes at our concert. I think that might have just been one of those magical nights when all the planets were in alignment. And yes, he is q"uite sensual" for his age. ;)

I’d like to see Gladys Knight and Chicago as well.

Mrs. wharfrat2 and I are going to Billy Joel and Elton John at Nationals Park in DC on Saturday. Will give a review on Sunday.

^^Would love to hear your review. We see them at Gillette in Mass on the 18th. My middle S attended one of their FL concerts in April and had a great time. He and his gf will be visiting next week and will be going with us.

In May, I saw the remaining member of the Grateful Dead along with Warren Haynes and Jeff Chimenti on keyboards. Amazing. there was so much energy from the band and the audience. I refer to it as a group musical orgasm :-)

I was one of the young farts at the DooWop concert at Wolf Trap a few weeks ago. Yep, there were older farts! Wow, the Skyliners still bring it…

I am going to the 1st No Depression festival Saturday
I know I will have a great time- H not so much.
He has to work- but is getting off early- he also is not that interested in the performers- [No Depression - No Depression for Americana and roots music](http://community.nodepression.com/)
But I got tickets to SubPop last year mainly cause I thought he would like Green River which he did- so he owes me
Plus on Monday tickets go on sale for Pearl Jam- they haven’t played Seattle for almost ten years.
so- excited.
:D

Wow! I think Paul McCartney was still a Beatle when this thread was started! Certainly some kids worrying about admission then have graduated from college.

Going to see the Steely Dan Internet Requests show soon. I’m excited to finally have a chance to see them play live!

I’m really sad - Tori Amos is performing tonight in Seattle, and I could not go. :(

For anyone who likes bluegrass…saw Cherryholmes and the Dan Timinski Band last Sat.
Both were beyond great. Sounded better live than on CD. In case you’ve never heard of Dan Timinski, he’s the “voice” behind George Clooney’s “I am a Man of Constant Sorrow”
in Oh Brother Where Art Thou. DT also played with Alison Kraus and Union Station before forming his own band.

In a couple weeks I’ll probably be one of the oldest concertgoers at Madison Square Garden-- am bringing D1 in to see Green Day. She’s 14, and it will be her first big concert. Mine was Boz Scaggs, second was Boston. She has better taste than I did at this age!

Cool, PackMom – I always wondered who that was. “Man of Constant Sorrow” is one of my iPod favorites…

Ok, as promised BJ/EJ review. Show was scheduled to start at 7:30, started maybe 10-15 minutes late with both on stage. Your Song opener with Billy and Elton alternating verses.

Before the next song could start, Elton John said he was having problems with his piano. He said he was stopping the show until it was fixed. Apparently a pedal was sticking. He was clearly ticked at one point saying, “He went to get a F*&$#g screwdriver.”

At any rate they decided Billy Joel would do his set while they got Elton’s piano fixed. His set was pretty good, fun enough. I should qualify my comment by saying that I don’t dislike Billy Joel but Elton John was the attraction for me. Mrs. wharfrat2 though was duly impressed. He ran through most of his catalogue of hits including My Life, Moving Out, Italian Restaurant, Allentown, We Didn’t Start the Fire, In the Middle of the Night, etc. I was sort of hoping for a Capt. Jack or Travellin’ Prayer.

Elton John’s set was stellar. I have to say I missed the first couple of tunes because I was in a brutal beer line. His set included Saturday Night, Daniel, Crocodile Rock, Tiny Dancer, Philadelphia Freedom, an AMAZING Rocket Man, and many others.

Then the two came out together and did several more tunes together including Candle in the Wind, Benny and the Jets, Only the Good Die Young, Still Rock and Roll to Me, ending with Piano Man.

While my musical tastes run toward jambands, it was definitely an enjoyable 3 1/2 hour show.

No Depression festival was fun, but we left before the end of Gillian Welch ( the headliner), my H had to get up for work the next day ( at 4am) and it wasn’t all that.
( however we especially enjoyed Patterson Hood & the Screwtopians, Justin Towne Earle & Samuel Beam/Iron & Wine)
However- I * finally* got tickets for Pearl Jam in Seattle in Sept & sprung for Outside Lands festival in San Francisco in August as well.
It will be the 33rd anniv from when H and I met & I think it will be a blast- can you imagine not only Pearl Jam, but Tom Jones!
;)

Patterson Hood is great! I love Drive By Truckers.

My-3-sons, I’ll be at Gillette on the 18th for EJ/BJ too! Wharfrat2, thanks for the review. 3 1/2 hours… wow. Guess we’ll be getting our money’s worth. I just hope the weather is good - it’s outdoors and our seats aren’t covered!
