Rhode Island and Environs

We are considering a trip to the Newport Folk Festival at the end of July. We should have about 10 days to vacation and are wondering where else we should visit. Boys went to college in Boston and one lives in New York City, so we’ve visited both of them multiple times and are looking for something different. It can be small towns, state parks, beaches, etc. We’ll fly there and rent a car to get places if there’s not public transportation. Any suggestions are welcome.

Block Island.

Hi, native Rhode Islander here, and YES Block Island is super fun! It’s the perfect day trip.I would also suggest leaving a couple days aside to explore Newport, and another one to just walk around Providence because they’re both lovely historic cities. Newport and Narragansett have great beaches (I recommend Second Beach which is technically in Middletown, but whatever). You should definitely check out the RISD museum as well as the Gilbert Stuart Museum (everything I’ve listed so far is in RI, so nothing is more than an hour from the other). Ummm, I promise you there is a lot to do here. I’ll do more research (my mom just told me about this really cute town, but I forgot the name). If you need restaurant suggestions PM me!!! We have a thriving foodie scene.

How about cape cod for a couple of nights (I suggest midweek). Maybe Martha’s Vineyard.

As I was reading the OP, I was thinking Block Island . . . Block Island . . . Arabrab took the words right out of my mouth.

Mystic Seaport

Wickford Village.

Thanks everyone. I can spend tomorrow checking these out.

Waterfire in Providence, RI - outdoor nighttime firelit performance art on the river, visible from riverbank park that bisects downtown Providence. RISD students started it years ago, now community has adopted it. Some Sat nights in summer.

Plimoth Plantation (yes that’s how to spell it) near Plymouth, MA - interpretive outdoor history museum. Character actors represent specific individuals on the Mayflower living out their first winter in North America. They’ll interact with you in character. It feels like time travel if you play with them.
