RHS (Resident Honors Program) 2009

nahh, poirotsfriend–they sent me an email recruiting me for next year too.
it’s not that we’re not in their system, but it’s cuz rhp puts us not in the normal usc admissions system–so the letter’s from the regular admission not rhp.

So how was watching Watchmen? I finally finished reading it, it is SO worth reading.
And I just moved, so I think it took so long for the letter to come cuz of the mail forwarding. Has anybody’s status on the admissions website changed to “we mailed your letter” or something to that effect?

No one got their letter yet? Neither did I. :\ I just came back from a trip with BPA, and I was really hoping that something would arrive when I was actually distracted from waiting…No luck.

About the article…At my school, there’s a group of kids who label themselves as “nerds” and are proud of that fact. They go around telling biology jokes and exclude people who “aren’t smart” in their clique. That’s what the RHP kids remind me of. If I end up going, I definitely will be humble about the fact that I’m RHP. Yeah, that’s great, we’re precocious. Now MOVE ON. There’s no point in making a big show of it. And I’m really glad that all of you seem to feel the same way. Ideally, the RHP group should have independent kids who…(*is about to make a dumb analogy) who can spread their wings and FLY but won’t be hesitant to return to the RHP nest. We should feed off of each other and grow, not stick together like clumps of oatmeal (I just had really disgusting oatmeal for breakfast).
That’s my two cents.

wow. i knew this forum was here, but i never noticed this thread’s existence. I applied to RHP before the Dec. 1 deadline and nothing has happened yet!
Actually, one of the ladies from the RHP office asked for my fall 2008 grades this week! I’m a little freaked out. I don’t think I got in… :(

Welcome to the thread!
I think that means that they’re wanting to see your fall grades before they make a final decision on you. So cross your fingers and hope that they were higher than before!
We had a short questionaire thing earlier to try to get to know the applicants in case some of us end up meeting each other later. You’re very welcome to join us if you like. (;
Most of us also have Facebooks, so you can also find us there and join the facebook prospective RHP group.

Well, Mish, you gave us another piece of information–they haven’t concluded with their decisions. I’m in your boat; I’m fairly certain I won’t get into the program, though I credit that mostly to my own ineptitude than anything. I really desire to be a part of the program, intensely. It’s perfect for me–absolutely perfect.

Whew.
rosinyangster: thanks! I am in fact crossing my fingers (I’ve been doing it for so long now, I think I’m about to get arthritis ;D) and yes, luckily, I got straight As during first semester. I hope all goes well!
poirotsfriend: I’m glad I’m not alone! But don’t lose hope yet! We still have some time before the final results are released. Also, don’t be so hard on yourself. Judging from what I’ve read of this thread, you and all of the other applicants are all super talented and hard working; I’m certain that whatever factors that cause one applicant to be accepted and one to be rejected are often painfully minute. Even if neither of us gets accepted, don’t let it get to you. Reapplying to USC next year should be a breeze :)

Michelle
Asian Female
Intended Major: Music
Dream Career: Music and Teaching
Dream College: Somewhere with a good academics and a good music program
Skills: Oboe (4 years), Piano (12 years), Er Hu (a couple months)
Interests: Eating (all-you-can-eat buffets are ideal!), Listening to/Playing music, Reading, Drawing, Sleeping
Dislikes: People who play out of tune, Arrogance, Cooked Carrots, Parsley, Heights
SAT: uhh…let’s just say over the RHP requirement
GPA: 3.9 uw
Enthusiasm for RHP: 4/5
Probability of Attending In Case of Acceptance: Depends on whether the oboe teacher I want to learn from wants to teach me :)

Our stats have some similarity; I’m a big music person as well. (12 years piano, 13 years of violin, 4 years viola, teaching middle-schoolers and some high-schoolers for 3 years)

However, I’m not sure that I want to major in music because I intend to pursue a career in law. I will keep teaching music all my life, however, because it’s something that’s easy for me. I’m taking a college class right now (Fundamentals of Music Theory, oh joy) and although I considered dropping when I realized it was for non-music majors (which means they started from the roots up: one and two and three and four and, counting blasted eighth note rhythms until kingdom come) I decided to stay in it because some of the help I was giving other students was really helping them get excited about music. That’s always a plus. :)

Welcome to the fam, yo~

Er hu? Is it safe to assume you’re Chinese then? xDDD
What city/state do you live in?
Your dislikes match mine pretty much perfectly. (: I especially hate arrogance and cooked carrots (I also don’t like cooked radishes…only raw ones, because they’re spicy). I’m scared of heights and roller coasters. A little bit of parsley (“xiang cai”, assuming that you speak Chinese, haha) is okay, but people tend to douse everything in parsley. You know they say common hatred bonds people together more so than love? This is great! I see that we’re going to be future biffles. Hahaha jk.

Oh man…my mom got that letter you got poirots and she sent me a text during school that it was the decision letter (she didn’t open it obviously) so I got all excited…ugh.
Welcome to the thread, michelle

welcome, mish!
haha…you guys–i hope letters come soon! otherwise planning visits for us out of californians is gonna be hard :(

haha thanks guys
Yes, I do in fact live in SoCal. And yes, rosinyangster,
it is safe to say that I am in fact chinese (and speak it)
and poirots I have shared your pain in theory class!
last year, I was a new student at my school and they placed
me in a theory one class. the teacher wouldn’t let me test out
even though she knew I played the piano and had prior theory experience.
So i spent the whole year teaching other people key signatures, intervals,
chords, and catching up on some much needed sleep :)

this whole waiting-for-the-april 1st-deadline thing is seriously beating on my
nerves. even if it’s rejection, I just need SOMETHING to put me out of my misery!

OMGGGGGGGGG!!!
A few minutes after writing that last post, the oboe department
head called me saying that USC wants me!!! OMG!!!

Yay!

Good for you!

This thread seems to have that effect on people.

Now it’s just me and Alan and Simon . . . ?

Now now…just because some people have gotten calls doesn’t mean they’re in…although it’s hard to argue in Michelle’s case. Congratulations!

DANG CONGRATULATIONS!
haha yup just us =P

by the way guys, who submitted their first semester grades?

By the way, when I got the little white USC letter I was certain it was the denial letter. (Admittance packet comes in big red folder.) So I’m glad it wasn’t.

And I did submit 1st semester grades. I’ve got trepidations about having done so, however, since one grade was not so satisfactory.

i didn’t cuz the infamous calls came around the time that i was thinking about maybe sending them.

we’ll see how it goes… i’m still getting college spam by the buttload.
from colleges i’ve never heard of. :(

Hey!
I just received my letter today! Despite my earlier pessimism, I’m feeling a little excited now. I live in SoCal so the rest of you should probably be getting them soon. Do you guys know if there’s any specific visit for RHP students? We should try and meet up in an orientation anyway.
Best of luck!
