Rice 2016 Applicants Thread

ESTHER is correct. Apparently something went wrong and they sent the email to everyone.

One question about aid-on my ESTHER account, under the ‘Award Overview’ section it lists a scholarship that I received, but nothing else. Elsewhere, it says that they ‘Need More Information’ for our prior year tax returns. Would that explain why, as far as I can tell, there’s no need based aid listed? Or am I dumb and just totally misunderstanding the process? (Which is totally possible.) I called the FA office a few minutes ago and left a voicemail, so hopefully they’ll call back soon.

Congratulations to all accepted, and for the others, I know it’s completely cliche, but everything will end up working out okay. A year from know, I know without a doubt that we’re all going to end up happy at our respective colleges, whatever they may be. :)

LAstShadow - If you were expecting need-based aid (per your EFC) it is possible that some FA documentation is incorrect, missing or additional info is needed. Talking to them is your best bet.

They are likely slammed today with questions and concerns. Good Luck!

Okay, thanks! And, yeah, I’ll be pleasantly surprised if I do get a call back today or something…

Congratulations to all who got in! Unfortunately, I won’t be able to join all of you at Rice, but I wish you guys all the best.

I looked all over on the esther site and it didn’t show any financial aid anywhere. Where was yours at? I looked at the financial aid link and it just said it something about there was no financial aid information for me right now or something like that…

^^ That is where scholarships are. Need based aid usually comes with or soon after.

Hey guys, I’ve alreadt accepted my offer of admission and am 100% sure Rice will be great for me, but my family is visiting Houston (for other reasons), and I was wondering if I could visit Rice as a slight detour. This would be on the 24th and 25th, so I’m guessing completely closed, but would I be able to just walk around the campus?

Most buildings and university offices will be closed, as are the colleges. You are more than welcome to walk around and see the campus though.

Yea, that’s what I’ll do. It’s mostly for my parents, as they are moving to California soon, and may not get a chance to see Rice after this for a long while.

Yeah you won’t be able to get into any of the buildings (save maybe a couple) but you can walk around campus if you’d like!

I would highly recommend coming for Owl Days if you can, though. It was a really awesome experience and a great way to meet current students, other incoming students, and experience college life early on. I actually had classes with several of my friends from Owl Days, and one person I met ended up being my Rice Group advisor during O-Week. Plus you get a lot of free stuff. haha So if you can visit, I definitely recommend it.

Quick question on the supplement: on the signature page, for the “two-dimensional, scannable image of something that appeals to you”, do you just put it in a .doc file and upload that? The common app won’t let me use a .png file.

try a doc, jpeg or pdf. One of those file formats should upload.

I copy/pasted my image into a Word document and uploaded that.

When is Owl Days?

Sometime in April.

ooh aright, seems great, yea I’ll definetely try to come then

I’m in downtown Houston right now, visiting some relatives, about 15 minutes from Rice. They suggested we check out the Rice campus before we leave for home tomorrow, and I was wondering if I just would be able to just go through an open entrance on Main Street and be able to drive around? Or is it all gated/locked? Cant really walk around as it’s raining/storming right now.

Yes, you can absolutely drive/walk around. The buildings will be locked, but you can still go through the campus.

My D submitted her application last week and I just realized that she never mentioned that Rice is her top choice in her “why Rice” essay. She’s very low key like that. Will that be an issue? Is there anything she should do at this point to let them know that Rice really is her top choice?
