More about cancellation of admission events. https://www.ricethresher.org/article/2020/03/on-campus-admissions-events-cancelled-over-coronavirus-concerns
@losername As noted in the above article, āThe offices of admission and financial aid will remain open to walk-in visitors.ā Thus, you can still visit Rice (though whether that would be advisable health-wise is up to you and your family). Both are great schools, but with very different vibes. @Houston1021 gives an excellent summary of Rice vs. Vanderbilt.
Thank you Houston1021 and Sunny66. Your comments are very consistent with everything Iāve been able to glean from blogs, reviews and current students. Itās a tough choice. Iām looking at a premed track but getting apprehensive about the long haul and cost/reward ratio. Maybe bio and chem with minor in business? Iām not all that interested in greek life but I would like the D1 sports environment in the SEC. Rice sounds a little friendlier, nerdier and collaborative. Vandy a bit more social, preppy and money-centric ⦠but I think I would find āmy placeā at either school. The nice thing is they both sound like great schools with happy students and an awesome education. I feel very lucky to have been accepted at Vandy and that my parents can afford to send me to either school. Good luck to all still waiting to hear.
Vanderbilt is an amazing school, as is Rice. It boils down to what you want to study. My son was accepted to Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech and a few others. He is looking at all of the schools from an engeneering perspective. Unless two of the remaining schools accept him, looks like it will be Georgia Tech over either Rice or Vanderbilt. But his decision is guided by which school has the best CEE program. So I suggest you focus on the area you plan to major as a key factor in deciding schools. Good luck!!
I donāt knowā¦I have mixed feelings about this. While I donāt know the rankings for all engineering disciplines, both Vanderbilt and Rice (and G Tech) have very strong engineering programs overall. Rankings change and there is not much of difference between a school ranked 5 and one ranked 10. When my D was trying to decide our attitude was that all the schools at the top of her list were great schools with strong programs in her major so we suggested she focus on which school she felt was the best fit for her. We felt the schools all provided great opportunities, but what was important was where would she feel most comfortable to explore those opportunities. We also knew that MANY kids change majors, either within engineering or out, so we did not want her to make a decision solely based on her specific major. We asked her to think whether or not she would be happy with her options should she decide to switch concentrations within engineering or drop engineering all together. I would guess about 1/2 my Dās friends have changed their majors and sheās still a freshman.
But I totally recognize the difficulties in making these decisions and there is a LOT to consider. And what is important varies person to person.
This thread is weirdly silent!
i donāt know why people are not as active on this thread as other schools
like we should be getting excited for rice decisionsācoming out on March 24th!!!
Iām so nervous, Rice is my dream school. 8 more days to go !
Does anyone know if the coronavirus outbreak will affect decisions for international applicants this year?
What time on the 24th will the decisions be released? Thanks.
are they 100% coming out the 24th?
yes
yay! Is it too late to update my application LMAO
Are you basing this on last yearās date being Tuesday the 26th, or do you have an official tweet or posting from Rice confirming that it will be the 24th?
its my instincts!
This is not the type of question that you can reliably give a truthful answer to based on your instincts, but hopefully you will have your answer soon.
Good Luck to all awaiting decisions. Last year Rice sent out an email to students a day or so before decisions released telling the applicants when the decisions would come out. @awesomepolyglot or others that were admitted last year may be able to provide some context.
I was ED, so this might not apply. I got an email on Tuesday before decisions came out saying theyād come out on Friday at 4.
They have it posted right on the Admissions page that decisions will come out on April 1, and that they donāt forsee any delays due to Covid 19. So April 1 - not March 24.
