Waitlisted. 33ACT, 4.0UW, 11 AP’s, 17/790, Great EC’s, Good Essays, Decent Recs.
Too bad, now I have to sit back and hope the outcomes of my other schools are better.

WOW. So was so stuned when I got in I had to log back into esther to make sure I logged in correctly. LOL, but I am extreamly pleased and excited, I even shed a few tears of joy as Rice was a little bit of reach for me. And @batfan my need-based financial aid awards up.

@batfan r u a batman fan by anychance?! if so thats cool because I sure am~hence the user name :)

Rejected…I visited all the way from Northeast… did everything… kept in touch, applied ED, got deferred… and I was crushed then…but they sent out that wrong “Congratulation make you deposit” letter to deferred students and they said it was a mistake and that crushed me twice…and so I took extra SATs II’s, wrote letters, did everything I can and now I’m rejected… flat out rejected… not even waitlisted… I’m crushed…

rejected. SAT: 2320 (800 writing, 790 reading, 730 math), SAT II: 770 Bio 770 Chem, APs: 11 including this year, 4s and 5s on all of them, rank: 1/about 300, essay: good, not great, not sure about recs because my teachers didn’t let me read them, a pretty good amount of community service, ECs: one sport that I do year round 3 hrs a day and a couple other small things, awards: national merit finalist, honor society, french honor society, ap scholar w/ distinction, max honors
extras: from the northeast, had an interview that I thought went well. i didn’t visit the school, but I went to the info session that came to my area. i was going to visit if i got in but…

This is terrifying to read So many 23XX getting rejected, and the more I read the more it makes me think “If they got rejected/waitlisted, how am I going to every get in next year” sigh. I think Rice is my first choice, but I’m trying to find other schools that I really like so I’m not crushed if I don’t get in.

@runallday4 - It goes to show that the admissions process at Rice is truly holistic. A good SAT score, while incredibly impressive, isn’t the only thing they look at. At this level you just can’t predict who the admissions office will take.

Congrats to all the future Owls! We can’t wait to have you on campus in the fall.

You will still need to have competitive SAT scores to be considered. I agree with FallenAngel9 about the admissions process being holistic. I think the most important essay in Rice’s application is “What can you bring to Rice?” You will also need to show them that you are interested. Make a campus visit and have an on-campus interview. We came from Ohio and visited in November. I think that made a difference in my son’s application and eventual acceptance.

I wouldn’t say the interview is extremely important, although I doubt it could hurt. I neither visited the campus nor requested an interview, and I still received an acceptance. Just make sure your grades/scores, extracurriculars, recommendations, and essays are good, and show that you’re really passionate about something.

just to add onto what FallenAngel9 was saying: don’t underestimate the importance of your activities, awards and essays. i was accepted and received an $18K/yr trustee scholarship with a 33 ACT score and a class ranking of 9/116. you have to meet a certain academic cutoff to receive a serious look, but once you’re past that threshold, the qualitative portions of your application often become more important than the quantitative portions, especially when it comes to the merit scholarships. good luck to future applicants!

ribalto hit the nail on the head. The subjective is what’s important once they know that the student will be academically capable of attending the school. Thus, the essays, recs, and all are particularly important (based on personal experience talking to friends and whatnot, I would definitely say that the essay about what you would bring to Rice is indeed a very important essay).

I certainly agree with ribalto and FallenAngel9. What I meant to say to runallday4 is if Rice is going to be your first choice (or any university that is going to be your first choice for that matter), I would hope that the student applicant visits that school that is going to be their #1 choice.

I’m 90% sure that Rice is my first choice, I’ve done a lot of research, but I haven’t visited yet. I plan to though, I want to try to go to the special weekend for high school seniors, and then apply ED. One thing I’m worried about is all the awards that some people have. A lot of the awards I have only heard about from CC, and would never have known about them otherwise, atm the only awards I have are school awards you get from having an A average, which isn’t a big deal. I also only have minimal volunteering. I think the only good things I have are my ECs. I don’t have a lot of them, but the ones I have are meaningful and hopefully I can use them to paint a picture of how I’m different and then put that in my essay.
