Rice University 2024 Waitlist

That’s a great school, congratulations!

Is rice still accepting people from the waitlist or what

Anyone hear from Rice this week?

Rice sent out an email saying they are uncertain if they will let in any more students from the waitlist. You need to send in another confirmation of whether or not you would like to stay on the waitlist in your student portal.

Yep I got the waitlist resubmission, guessing the odds are pretty low now which sucks.

Quickly typed up a very short 2nd LOCI reiterating my interest but don’t have hope anymore

Did anyone accept their spot on the summer waitlist? Based on this, I think it is safe to assume that Rice has filled all their spots for the class of 2024.

Hey guys, I called the AO and they said that they ARE NOT necessarily full, it’s just that they are currently assessing their plan going forward as to how much/if the WL will be used in the coming weeks.

Thanks for sharing. That seems a little more hopefully and there is still a chance that a few of us may get off the waitlist in the next few weeks.

Anyone heard anything?

I haven’t, maybe the class is full?

Rice’s President said in a Town Hall last week that as of 5/18/20, the class of 2024 currently has 1058 undergrads that have sent in deposits. That seems to be a full class. He also said they had not decided on the policy if students wanted to defer admission. Perhaps Rice will go to the waitlist if people that have committed decide not to attend or defer. Here is the link to the Town Hall. There is a slide in the Powerpoint which has the 1058 number. https://training.rice.edu/presidents-town-hall-meetings/

There is no getting around it at this point: they are overenrolled by at least 100 students. Last year’s class was 967, and that was considered ‘overenrolled’.

Since I need to start truly finalizing my plans for this fall, I’ll be giving up my spot on the waitlist. Made a last-minute switch from Vanderbilt to WUSTL, so it looks like I’ll officially be in St. Louis this fall. I wish it could’ve been Houston, but it just wasn’t meant to be :disappointed: . Best of luck everyone!

@Houston1021 This is not great news. Thank you for the update though. @WaitlistBoy my son was holding out hope too, but will also be at WashU this fall. It’s is a great school and I’m glad to see you chose it over Vandy. We are from MN - how about you?

@WaitlistBoy can you advise on what made you switch from Vanderbilt to WUSTL? Are you on pre-med track?

I think a lot of other colleges have been ending their waitlists, anyone know if Rice will soon?

No one knows, but my guess is they’re only keeping the waitlist open as a formality in case a lot of admitees ask for (and receive) a year’s deferral.

I was FINALLY able to pry out some info from the admissions office today in a phone call. The class of 2024 is more than full. The only reason why the waitlist is being kept open is that in mid-July, there is a deadline for students/families to confirm that they will be matriculating this fall, and not be asking to defer enrollment, plan to enroll somewhere else, etc. The AO I spoke to said that they believe their over-enrollment will provide a sufficient buffer against an above-average level of melt, but are holding onto the WL in case something crazy happens. They encouraged me to re-apply next cycle as a transfer if I remained interested in Rice.

The AO I spoke to today said they’re keeping the waitlist open though July, and if it closes everyone on it would be notified, so as of right now it’s technically open and will stay that way this month. The chances they’ll dip into the waitlist again are pretty slim, but I was told to keep sending updates.

Rice students have to complete a survey regarding their plans to return to campus. “All undergraduate students, incoming and returning, must complete the Dean of Undergraduates’ survey sent to students on July 1. The survey is due by 5:00pm (central time) on Monday, July 6. The survey is brief and requests your enrollment and housing intentions regarding the Fall semester. Please know that your answer is not binding, but will allow us to better understand your plans and prepare accordingly.” In addition, Rice is converting one of the residential colleges (Sid Richardson) into isolation living space for students that test positive for COVID. Unless there is a huge number not returning to campus for the semester or taking gap years, I doubt there will be much movement on the wait list.

@Houston1021 thank you for that information. I wish that that the AO could at least communicate where they are in the process. Other schools have at least publicly said that their class is full but will keep the waitlist open just in case. Nothing from Rice since mid-may.
