Rice University Class of 2023 RD Thread

I’m a parent of a current Rice freshman. Whether accepted, rejected or waitlisted, the students represented on this and related Rice 2023 threads appear to have compiled exemplary records as students and people before applying. I’m not sure I’ve seen a more distinguished group of applicants. Rice is an outstanding school and if you were accepted deserves your full consideration. If you were waitlisted you may yet be admitted, but if not, or if your application was rejected, you are bound to attend and succeed at another excellent school. Feel confident and take comfort in the record you earned in reaching this point. Achievement like yours requires great talent, drive and hard work, and they will serve you well wherever you go in the future. Congratulations and the best of luck to all of you.

Daughter: ED, deferred, then Accepted: Biomedical Engineering
ACT 34, SAT 1410 GPA 4.0 weighted, Class 23/378.

Wondering if anyone else have seen The Rice Investment applied/offered, yet? We’re b/w the $130 and $200k on combined salaries. But not call back and left messages.

@zenco77 we are under $130K but the additional assets pushed us outside the window. We didn’t get any Rice Investment benefits. $200K house, with some savings and 401K. Just remember it is $130K plus typical assets.

The financial aid package should be contained in the folder in the large envelope that the student will receive in the mail shortly. Admissions and financial aid are probably besieged with calls right now. You can email financial aid also and might get quicker response. https://financialaid.rice.edu/contact-us

@zenco77 Lots of people between $130K and $200K are receiving nothing from the Rice Investment so you are far from alone. Just make sure you don’t accept under the assumption that aid will surely be forthcoming, as a fair number of families seem to have done.

SoCal Rachel didn’t get into Rice but we didn’t lose hope . We congratulate all new Owls and wish them the best! Today SoCal Rachel got admission offers to Princeton (her first choice), Brown, and Duke. All full tuition offers through either Air Force ROTC or Naval ROTC! Her destiny moments remind me how good God is!

@destinymoments congratulations to your daughter. She has some wonderful choices.

Our DS went to SOAR , got fee waiver to apply to Rice, Got in and was so excited . Just like many of families here , we are in between 65k-130k , but we got only 15k for scholarship. The question is : How can we get 212k ( Rice COA is 68k so we have to come up with 53k x 4 =212k ) to pay for our kid to go to Rice ? We have 6 years to retire in 65 ,so we have some saving for our retirement ( Rice calls it a typical assets ) .If do that, we have to work until 70.
We hope our DS understands and listen to us to go to our State school (full ride ). Just want to share our situation with you and we appreciate all your feedback.

@ProudParentFL it is good your family have an option. We do not. My daughter was accepted ED, so we are kinda stuck. But it is cool, my daughter is happy and excited for Rice. We just need to make life adjustments.

Rice Investment seems to have fallen short for a lot of people… what even are typical assets?

@jmeryllman Did you appeal to financial aid department ? I believe no ones should have to pay full price unless you are millionaires .

@ProudParentFL we have been waiting for their decision since Jan 8, we were told 2 weeks, then 3 weeks, then now just wait til the fall. We have updated them with our 2018 tax return (not sure if it’ll help, but our AGI is lower than 2017). Still crossing fingers. Our daughter loves Rice and we have taken a positive attitude towards the situation.

One does not have to be a millionaire to have a full pay EFC.

@awesomepolyglot Thanks for the early heads up!!! Posting the pdf on Owl Days saved us a couple hundred dollars+. I made quick 24 hour refundable reservations on notification night. When I went to play with details the next day (get a little closer to campus/ consider staying Fri night), hotels and flights were almost twice the price.

@ProudParentFL similar situation, but free OOS Public. We’re going to take our time with decisions.

@awesomepolyglot
From https://financialaid.rice.edu/rice-investment-faqs:
“Typical Assets are: Families with significant assets above what is typical for their income level may not qualify for The Rice Investment, but Rice is still committed to funding 100 percent of demonstrated need. A family’s assets might include cash and savings, investments, home equity, business net worth, other real estate and any other assets. We exclude qualifying retirement accounts.”

We paid off our +$200k home a few years back being the good financial steward that we are…regretting it now…would have saved me $24k x 4 with half tuition paid. Gonna run that $96k against my amortization of interest i avoided tonight. Might be a wash ;-).

Accepted! Trying to decide between Rice and Vanderbilt.

Questions for @awesomepolyglot . Son is a serious about bouldering and a nationally ranked lead climber. Very high scores and grades, but we are screening all potential colleges first via climbing. Which schools do you recommend him applying to for 1) top local climbing gyms, 2) merit possibilities, and 3) academic rigor? Thanks!

@Escalade just sent you a PM.

Has anyone enrolled yet? It is taking forever for my deposit to be processed :frowning: I just want my letter so I can join the FB group lol

Congrats, @rockstar01121! Are you going to request your sibling’s college?
