Rice University

Does anyone know how good of a school Rice is? And how hard is it to get into compared to the northeastern ivies and selective lac’s?

Rice is a really good school. It is much better than northeastern and much more selective. But I don’t think that it is as good as the ivies. If you want more information about the school you should visit www.xap.com (and do a search for Rice University).

Rice is a great school!!! If you have any more questions, e-mail me or post them here.

The only flip side is that you probably need some means of transport. Houston is a huge place with poor public transport… and it’s too hot and humid to walk or cycle even in November.

Houston, this time of year, will be highs in the 60s-70s and lows in the 40s-50s. It doesn’t get really hot until June - mid Sept. By Oct, the high temps drop back to 80s and Indian summer lasts almost until Thanksgiving. It is humid as most coastal regions are.

Rice is considered in the middle of the pack when compared to the Ivies. Last ranking I saw had it at #5 overall and it is considered a Best Buy in most rating guides as it is about 25% cheaper than most Ivies and LACs.

That is incorrect about transportation in Houston. Rice is right on the light rail and all students get passes. There is lots of shopping and dining right next to Rice (which is a gorgeous campus). Many students have bikes and enough have cars that you can always get a ride somewhere.
Academics are great. My D is a sophomore and had no interest in the Ivys. The residential college system provides a great way to make close friends and feel a part of the community.
My D likes the weather- it does rain frequently, but shorts and flip flops in the winter make it worthwhile.
Would be glad (as would she) to answer questions.

I, too, was very impressed with Rice. Son applied and was waitlisted or he would be going there. It is a lovely campus, the students seem very friendly and Rice has an excellent reputation. I didn’t want to like it because it was in Houston, but I did. It is certainly worth visiting.

From the site i already posted above.

is it true that theres a lot of alcohol there?

and do you think being from out-of-state (new york) would have any effect on Rice admissions?

Rice has a liberal alcohol policy- there is drinking behind closed doors in the dorms. This keeps it off the streets, to a large extent. There are plenty of New Yorkers at Rice. My D’s boyfriend is from Queens- picked Rice over some Ivys because of $$$$ offered.

I read recently that Rice is about half Texans. Not sure that’s right but I think it is.

Rice is the best school in the south, and does have a lot of texans, but whats wrong with that?

also its an incredible deal

i don’t think that you can conclusively say that rice is the best in the south (duke? vanderbilt?). but yeah it’s a great school. as said above, residential system is nice.

hmm, maybe duke is better, but rice is definetly better for texas and the southwest. also you have to admit that a lot of dukes reputation comes from their basketball team. rice gets some from baseball, but not as much

and rice is better than vandy i think, but id MUCH rather go to vanderbilt

surfinsofa -

Come to Rice - we need more NY-ers! There are some, but not a lot. And it can only help coming from out-of-state.
Where in NY are you from?

im from a few hours north of NYC. But i used to live in texas, so i dunno whether i classify as a new yorker or a texan.
Where are most of Rice ppl from? I know obviously TExas, butare there a lot of ppl from out-of-state? And are they mostly from like the mid-west and south?
