Rice vs. Emory?

Which is better in terms of academics and campus life?

I’ll be attending Rice this fall and my older brother will be a senior at Emory. From what he’s told me, it sounds like Emory and Rice are equally rigorous when it comes to academics. However, I’ve been informed that many Emory students have a bit of an attitude and might be less accepting of differences/idiosyncrasies in their classmates than Rice students. Personally, I never felt any desire to go to Emory. Rice was just too perfect to pass up. :)

I researched and applied to both schools and had the same dilemma deciding which school to go to.

I think it depends on what you are studying… there are some areas that Rice is better in (sciences, math, engineering, since Emory doesn’t have engineering) and other areas Emory is better in (maybe social sciences and humanities, although these are strong at Rice as well). I think overall, Rice is slightly more rigorous than Emory… many people I talked to, including my friend from Houston, my guidance counselor, my former supervisor who went to Columbia (and knows a lot about colleges) and my private college counselor, viewed Rice as slightly more rigorous than Emory. Nevertheless, the academic reputations for both schools are close to equal, but I would still give the advantage to Rice.

In regards to quality of life, Rice wins hand down. Princeton Review ranked us #2 for quality of life (behind WashU) and #15 for happiest students, whereas Emory does not appear on either list. The residential college system creates a tight-knit, collaborative atmosphere. I visited Emory 3 times and Rice once, and the students at Rice appeared to be more friendly, aware, and intellectual than Emory students. Plus, we are close to all the major attractions in Houston, so you can take the metrorail/bus to all these places. Emory is a more surburban campus, and the metro system in Atlanta is not as reliable… so it is harder for freshmen to go off-campus. Nevertheless, quality of life at Emory is still good, but quality of life at Rice seems better in my opinion.

There are countless “Rice or Emory” threads on CC… reid posted one of them. Click the “search forum” box on both the Rice and Emory threads, type in "rice or emory,‘’ and you should find more thoughts on these two schools.

@ OP:

I would also suggest you read through similar threads on the Emory board as well by searching for them. Beware, many Emory students have surprisingly not heard of Rice.
