<p>I have a coworker who lived with her rich PI (as a caretaker, get your mind out of the gutter). He founded Centocor and had an appointment at Thomas Jefferson. He didn’t have a lab at his home, but he did have several homes and she lived like royalty while being a lab tech in his lab/au pair. I can only imagine that he funded his own research.</p>

<p>Although, a pair of researchers in the pysch department here devoted their property to the upkeep of enormous aviaries which house the subjects of their experiments (they study social behaviors in mockingbirds). And when the bank account starts running low, they open it for elementary school field trips :)</p>
