Obviously a great reason to go to yale

oh and 1:03 and 1:06 for those who would like more views of the gear

hahaha! hilarious.

It’s weird. I’ve never seen gear with a Y that big, or blue-on-blue that way. At first, I thought it might actually be BYU gear, but it turns out there’s a difference between the BYU Y and the Yale Y, and that’s definitely a Yale Y. Just not official Yale design, I think.

Separately, can someone explain what’s so great about Rick Ross? He really seems like the flavor of the moment, but I can’t figure out why anyone cares. Part of that is no doubt due to my being an old white guy. But not all of it, given that I am an old white guy who enjoys hip hop and listens to and buys a fair amount of it.

how could you argue with this face? http://www.eurweb.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/rick-ross.jpg

I am an early middle aged white guy, not all that into hip hop music or culture, who has been noticing this surprising, and perhaps, ironic rise of the Yale “icon” in urban culture over the last couple of years. At least in New York. I helped found a not-for-profit group which provides free after-school athletic and cultural programs for teens in a couple of the Bronx’s toughest neighborhoods, so I spend about 2 days a week in an area that is a particularly fertile ground for new urban sounds and trends. I started noticing a lot of kids wearing Yale jackets and hats about two years ago and it’s really noticeable now, I see them every day. It is by far the most prominent university emblem around in this neighborhood – much more so than Columbia, which is just across the bridge, or other big name schools such as Harvard or Princeton. At first I thought people were mistaking the Y for the Yankees, but many of these items spell “Yale” right out. I now see the stuff in almost every discount urban clothing store in the hood. I was really shocked to see a whole section of “Yale” stuff in a Macy’s in downtown Brooklyn around Christmas time.

Some of the kids in our programs wear this regalia, so I have asked them what it all means. They just say that Yale means “class”. I asked them why not Harvard – they say they think of Harvard as for “nerds”, Yale for ultimate “class” and “power”. “All the presidents go there,” they say. Go figure. They think of Princeton as being for “Richie Rich’s”, spoiled bratty kids without the class or power Yale represents.

Harvard, I know, vigorously protects its trademarks. I wonder to what extent Yale is aware of this, authorizes any of this, or collects any kind of fees. I personally think it is quite good for the Yale “brand” to be thought of as cool, even if it is being sported in an ironic way.

I wonder how much “Gossip Girl” is responsible for this. This is sort of a riff on the rich, white kids that so desperately want to get into Yale on that show, maybe?

I agree that gossip girl has very much to do with this disturbing trend. Down with blair and serena!

Actually dan and serena forever.
