ridiculous housing situation

i need a place to live nearby for an internship i have this summer. since its a small city, and i dont have a car, craigslist didnt list many options in that city

this one place, a person’s house, has a room for lease, which i’m currently looking at. BUT, i have to submit a freaking application, with TWO references!!! i dont really have any references, except for some of my professors from school, but i REALLY dont want to have to bug them for something like this. i only want to ask them a favor when absolutely necessary, like asking for letters of rec for grad school

how is that ridiculous? that’s probably what most places ask for

That is pretty ridiculous. Are they looking for housing references as far as landlords or personal references? I’ve never been asked for personals and I’ve lived on my own for two years (three apartments).

Don’t you have adult family friends who can provide references?

Still, as a former professor, I wouldn’t have minded writing a reference for your kind of situation. And as a person who had some horrendous experiences with rental properties, I understand why your prospective landlords want the references. Also, having a stranger live in one’s house can put one at considerable risk, so of course the person wants to do everything possible to get info about you before agreeing to allow you to rent.

^oh ok, hopefully my profs wont mind acting as references

Why would a housing place ask for references from a professor? They’re probably talking about character references, so just get someone like a parent’s friend or some close family friend to write one for you.

iamright is right here. They are looking for family/friends who would be willing to vouch for you and say that you are a good, dependable person who will pay rent on time and will not destroy their place.

How about the RA from your dorm?
