Ridiculous internship requirements

“Experts” in Java and C++
“Thorough” knowledge of XML
“Prefer” extensive experience with Oracle
etc etc.

I thought internships is where you learn these skills? Why would I be in college looking for internships if I have any of the above?

Seems like someone cut and pasted a typical overspecified list of requirements.

It is an annoyingly common practice when writing job listings to overspecify the list of requirements for the job, even though only a few are actually required while the rest are merely desired. Job seekers know this, so anyone who has a subset of the list will send in a resume or application, even if the subset does not match the actually required list.

On the other hand, it would not be unreasonable at some schools to expect a junior in CS to have a good command of Java and/or C++, as these are commonly used in CS courses that a junior in CS is likely to have taken (of course, it is less reasonable if the listing is aimed at freshmen or sophomores). XML and Oracle are more specialized things, though.

gotta remember too…at bigger companies gathering candidates (for perm and temp) for jobs is often outsourced to people who really don’t understand the actual needs of the job.

A good example is my husband’s new job: He was called out of the blue by a head-hunter. After he got the job he saw the actual posting for the position and said there was NO WAY he would have applied to it based on what they said they wanted.
