Rigid school district

[No diploma for teen mom who chose sick baby over taking WASL | KOMO News - Seattle, Washington | News](http://www.komonews.com/news/19512484.html)

She could have applied for a medical waiver, but no one in the district told her about it.

Why is it that in some fields, where we could really welcome innovation and creative thinking, we are less likely to see it?

She should be able to walk with her class- they told her no.

Last weekend we were at a wedding discussing things just like this. It seems that the education system has lost all common sense.

Disgusting.
The poor mother.
Is the baby OK?

It sounds like he is still subject to seizures, but he is home and is well enough that she then is able to turn her attention to the rest of her graduation requirements.
She has a class specifically for graduation requirements that met daily, seems like the place to mention that a medical emergency would be a reason that they could waive the WASL requirement.
She seems like a good mom- very hard thing for a young woman to have to deal with.

the stupidity behind this is that whether a degree how does she make life better for the child…I am just appalled at the stupidity of the school

Disgusting story - it sounds like she will be able to get a diploma in August, after taking the exam, but the current question is whether she will be able to participate in graduation with her classmates. We have seen plenty of stories on other threads about kids whose graduation is in question are able to participate in graduation and get an empty diploma holder. Let’s hope that this publicity will motivate the school district to do the right thing.

I heard on the news that a girl from somewhere won’t be able to walk with her class because she missed too many days of school…the reason for her absences…she has cancer and was in the hospital undergoing chemo.

Schools are getting too rigid about absences to a point where you shake your head. My DD got bit by a copperhead snake 3x in her foot and had to spend 5 days in the hospital…they would not exempt her from her final because she had 5 absences (the rule is 4 absences and A, you do not need to take it) Now this is nowhere near the same as these other 2, but I went and argued with the teacher and principal, sorry mam a rule is a rule if we allow her to get away with it then we have to for everyone else…I looked at him and asked how many students in this school right now have 5 absences from being in the hospital? It wasn’t like I said she’s home sick and we went to Disneyland!

^^^something like that happened at my school

Now my older Ds private school allowed a boy to walk even though he had been kicked out of school shortly before the end of the year.
( for behavior- he kept mouthing off in class & when they told him one more time & you are out, he apparently couldn’t resist)
However, because the school had higher graduation requirements, than the state did for seniors, he was allowed to receive a state diploma and he walked with his class & even though the class was small enough that the director gave a short speech about each- it wasn’t mentioned & he is now featured in the alumni newsletter for his accomplishments ( he is a decorated Marine)

When you think about the gaffes that politicians and others on the public payroll make, ( and we forgive them) it seems very narrow minded to focus so much on kids who don’t follow a straight path.

My S had a febrile seizure just once, and there was no where i was gonna be but the hospital with him. This is just idiotic.

This is just wrong. The district should be ashamed of themselves.

When we WANT young women who have had a child to finish their HS diplomas and set up programs that offer the support and resources they need, to withhold a diploma because this young mom was at the hospital with a critically ill infant is absolutely reprehensible. She is doing everything right. Shame, shame, shame on the school system. Hope they not only reverse the decision, but apologize to her.

My sister’s employer was similarly rigid when she missed work because her baby was in the hospital. Consequences came down just as they would have if she’d been off on a heroin bender.

And no, my sister doesn’t work on an aircraft carrier or as a transplant surgeon or anywhere that lives depend on her. It was ridiculous.

Funny thing Hanna, the heroin addict who went on a bender has more rights, b/c it is considered an addiction, which makes them handicapped according to Civil Rights. I found out only recently if you are a recovering addict, you are no longer considered handicap, but breaking the law by doing illegal drugs gives you more rights.

How awful. Common sense seems to be a rare commodity these days.

bulletandpima, I hope your daughter is all right! What an ordeal!
