rigor of cmu academics?

i’ve been reading some student reviews, and many people have said that many cmu students don’t have a “social life” because they are busy doing homework and studying.

exactly how tough are the academics at cmu? as tough as the ivies? around the level of johns hopkins and northwestern? around the level of nyu and boston college?

I would say it depends somewhat on your major. In general, CMU is a very rigorous school. If you’re in SCS, it’s comparable to being at MIT/Ivies/etc. If you’re in CIT, it is also quite rigorous (I am in CIT). Other college can also be quite rigorous, but definitely depends on your major in some cases.

if i were to commit to cmu, I’d be a bio major in mcs. do you think the rigor of my courseload would also be comparable to the ivies?

I would guess that as a bio major, you’d still have a social life. Worry not. It’s mostly CS (and some of the CFA programs) that have no free time, from what I’ve noticed.
