This question is mainly about the comp sci programs. My friend claims that Stanford coddles its students, and told me to go to Berkeley if I want “a real education.” Is this true, and if it is is it because Stanford just grades more easily with the actual material taught being the same in difficulty, or does Berkeley actually teach more?

is your “friend” at Stanford or at Berkeley?

You will get a very fine education in CS at Stanford, and you will work your butt off most of the time. Being “cuddled” is not a bad thing when it means that you get personal attention from the professors, and they actually know your name.

Yeah, he is in Berkeley EECS.

Was he accepted at both, and chose Berkeley because he wanted “a real education?” (Somehow I don’t think so …;))

The rigor of CS education at both is the same. Both are going to be very rigorous. It’s probably true that Stanford coddles its students a bit, which is why it’s very difficult to flunk out of Stanford. However, I don’t think that diminishes the difficulty of its CS program.

kyledavid80- where do you go to school?
