I feel like there’s always been 2 types of gymnastic bodies - the powerful vault type (Mary Lou Retton, Simone, etc.) and the lithe parallel bars type (Nastia Lukin, Svetlana Bogunskaya, Nadia, etc.). Everyone in both types is more muscular today.
That may be true of Team USA, but it really depends on a young woman’s ethnicity, etc. Nastia was/is not stocky. Madison Cocian has a slender physique. The Chinese women are so tiny that they make Simone look tall, but they do well.
Pretty much all of the athletes are more muscular today.
Ok, another gripe about the female gymnasts. it probably comes from having a child who danced for years but I want to get in there and fix some of their hair. I’m used to bun perfection. Haha. I think I’m definitely focusing on the wrong things when I watch. :-B
I don’t understand the fixation on their bodies, hair, and/or outfits. These are amazing athletes- who cares what their cosmetics are doing?
With that said, I just look at the glitter in the corners of their eyes and I can’t figure out how that’s not getting in their eyes with all the sweat and whatnot. It just looks potentially very painful.
I agree it shouldn’t be a focus for athletes, @romanigypsyeyes, but THEY choose to make it a focus by wearing the glitter, the blinded out leotards, the doodads in their hair. I’d prefer they pared back on all that stuff and toned it down. But since they don’t, I’m ok with nit picking about the choices.
Besides skaters, they seem to be the only ones who doll themselves up.
Anyone else thinks the Chinese gymnasts look about 12 years old, not 20?
Yup, but its that way every 4 years.
Correct, the 1983 World University Games. In a related bit of trivia, Greg Louganis, who hit his own head, albeit on the springboard in 1988, won gold medals at those games
OMG! After barely making the semi- final, Nathan made the final as the top seed!
I was at work and could not watch the prelims… almost died when I did not see his name at the top of the list of qualifiers!
Phew!!!
Swimming World has a pretty good coverage of the events and so does SwimSwam - for those who cannot watch videos in the office. ![]()
It is sooo funny! The kids on the bus sitting behind me are watching the Olympics and commenting, “OMG, he won. He is 31…”
Don’t poke the tiger!
OMG. I skipped yoga to watch Olympics tonight. I can’t imagine better TV
With the Games, I am finally getting my $ worth… we pay Comcast through the nose just to watch stupid CNBC for 30 minutes while we eat breakfast.
Why is the dive well Kelly green??
No one knows.

Geez… Now I am worried about the 4x 200 relay!!! No spoilers. Signing off.
Yes, I’d read the CNN article (that’s how I knew to call it a “well”, lol). Still no clear answer.
I’m in Asia. Watching synchronized diving live at 3 AM for synchronized diving, the Aussie commentators on the station I found said something was wrong with the filtration system. Algae turned it green. Is this the diving well in question? Hard for me to put together what’s being shown in the US. Commentators said some swimmers didn’t want to risk their health in the practice pool.
