Lochte was born under the wrong star.
@Momofadult - Aly’s beam routine was solid! The Russian who is currently ahead of her in 2nd place didn’t do as well. They said she was missing “connections” between moves and seemed very nervous. Maybe her high score on the bars is what is keeping her in 2nd. I don’t remember the two beam scores to compare them, but the Russian had been in first place after the 2nd round because of her high parallel bars score.
One round to go and Aly can catch up if she does well on floor.
I suspect the coats for the swimmers are a combination of things, by keeping their body warm like that it helps keep their muscles loose, plus if they had been in the practice pool before they likely might be feeling cold, too, water draws a lot of body heat from a person, even relatively warm, heated pools, so they might need to coats to help build up their body heat and feel warm (and that is just a guess, never been a competitive swimmer).
Fiji has won it’s first gold medal. You can hear it online, not on NBC primetime. Figures.

Oh wait, they just showed about 20 seconds worth of coverage. The match was won more than 3 hours ago and it’s after midnight EST!
Anthony Ervin’s lucky tie - again.
Nice prelims!
My daughter would have liked a parka for her swim meets. She gets chilled on the pool deck sometimes. I assume it’s the combination of swimming in cold water and the ventilation system which circulates cold air to maintain the air quality. She usually wears a sweatshirt and might even take a mini hot shower between events just to warm up. Though an Olympic parka would work well!
@greenwitch Mustafina had killer uneven bar routine. It’s her best event. Bars are Raisman and Biles’ weakest event. So it’s not that surprising Mustafina surged ahead.
As for the swim parkas, they do keep your muscles warm. And yeah, it can get very cold going from warmup pool/lane to waiting for your race.
Oops. That was semifinals.
Nice swim for Ryan Murphy!
@VMT They didn’t have parkas? Damn. Back when I swam and played water polo, everyone had one. But our meets/games were outside and sometimes it was very cold out there so parkas were a necessity. I still have mine.
I remember baby kiddo saying that the only thing she wanted for Christmas was a “swim fur coat”
Summer swimming here in our neck of the woods can mean swimming under pouring rain in 50-degree weather. Their team parkas has that fake fur lining and were lifesavers!
West coast watcher here… Oh good god. What happened to Lochte’s hair?! What’s up with the blue splotches? Did he hang out in the diving pool last night?
WOW!!! Phelps is a speedy TANK. B-)
Look up “in the zone” in the dictionary and you’ll see the US women gymnasts. They’ve been unreal from start to finish, all 5 of them. So happy for Aly Raisman finally getting her medal. Both she and Simone knew they’d nailed it halfway through their floor routines, you could tell. Perfection.
Simone Biles is spectacular, yet I think it was more exciting to watch Aly Raisman – or Gabby Douglas four years ago – because they were actually competing for their medals. Biles is so dominant that her all-around seemed to be more of a coronation than a competition.
@saillakeerie I will be keeping an eye on badminton for sure. In London, the most watched event, believe it or not, was the men’s singles final in badminton. (Those two players met each other in Beijing’s final as well). This time around it will be the semi-final.
Not sure who I want to cheer for. On one hand I want to see Malaysia win her first ever gold medal. On the other hand I also like to see the greatest player in history winning a third gold.
The Chinese are having a bad Olympics, so there is no way in Hades they will sweep all the gold in badminton again. Not good for the sport anyway.
Biles won by 2.1 points. That is bigger than the margin of victory from 1980 to 2012 combined. Amazing.
Video of the Ravens preseason football came stopping to watch Michael Phelps swim. Ravens represent his hometown of Baltimore.

Love seeing his mom, fiancee, and son at each competition. So happy for them.

@trojanchick99 no one in our LSC had parkas, and we are in the Northeast. Crazy, right?
I agree- watching Aly Raisman compete for the silver was exciting. I avoided potential spoilers, though my H almost spilled the beans. And Simone Manual’s 100 free Gold was a great moment.
“@Scipio , have you counted the Ducks in track and field?”
Yes, 18 current and former Ducks will compete in Rio in track, 11 of which are on the US team, which is very impressive. The article linked in post #324 clouds the count by including athletes who have “connections” to the Northwest but didn’t necessarily attend U of O…
