Rio Olympics 2016 - schedule and discussion

Can’t wait for the 1500m! I run that seriously on my track team.

A great article about Missy Franklin:

Team USA Miss Sunshine.

“But an American record for Molly Huddle, which I think is clean.”

What ever happened to “No Spoilers?”

Sorry- I didn’t think anyone cared about spoilers in the road race.

I just discovered that there are 2 Carli Lloyds playing for the US in Rio: soccer and volleyball.

I love how the trampoline women cheer for each other and hug each other after each woman does her routine. Love, love, love it! Go Rosie!

“Sorry- I didn’t think anyone cared about spoilers in the road race.”

Road race? The women’s 10K was run on the roads this time instead of the track? That is big news. I never heard anything about that. It’s tough to sell tickets to a road race. I recorded the race and can’t wait to get home to watch it.

I won’t spoil it for you @Scipio

Sorry- I’m trying to multi-task. Meant to say “distance race”. I won’t do anymore spoilers.

So what are the rules about spoilers? Do we really have to wait til midnight each day before discussing anything that happens that day?

If you truly want to avoid spoilers don’t you have to avoid the internet?

If you’re trying to avoid spoilers and come to a thread about the Rio Olympics, you’re not really trying hard enough. Results are all over any news site. To avoid those but then specifically come to this thread…

I agree. ^^^ Don’t click on a thread about the Olympics if you don’t want to know what happened. It’s like the many TV show threads on here where people DVR it and come on the night the show aired and get mad that people are – gasp – talking about what they just saw.

You’re right. If you come a thread about the Olympics you should expect to hear discussion about the Olympics, possibly including some results. I was more poking fun at MofWC who, at the beginning the discussion of the women’s 10K in post #369, said “No spoilers” and then immediately proceeded to post up spoilers about it. I meant it more as a joke more than a complaint.

Did you know the Olympic winners pay a victory tax for each medal they win?
“Athletes can offset their potential tax hit with the hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses they’ve likely racked up for training and traveling, if they treat their sport as a profession.”

Okay, I asked because I wasn’t sure if I unwittingly had spoiled something!

Having said that, wow, what a surprise that the U.S. soccer women are out.

Wait, what?!? They’re out? Argh! I was going to watch it later. j/k

Well, I didn’t say who won or what place Molly Huddle finished!

I apologize if this has already been discussed (I went back 3 pages and didn’t see anything) but did anyone see the San Jose Mercury News headline after Simone Manuel’s win?

“Michael Phelps shares win with African-American”

http://news.nationalpost.com/sports/rio-2016/san-jose-mercury-news-apologizes-for-insensitive-simone-manuel-headline

So let’s see… so far we’ve had amazing women reduced to nameless wives of professional athletes and now an amazing swimmer reduced to her race. How does this still happen in 2016? Don’t these headlines have to go through at least 2 people and no one is raising flags?

Aaand Hope Solo strikes again…

from the New York Times:

Seriously, is good sportsmanship completely dead? As I used to tell the little 10 year old girls I coached when D played AYSO, “Anything can happen in soccer…”
