Rio Olympics 2016 - schedule and discussion

There is no special “victory tax” for Olympic champions. It’s just ordinary income tax that we all pay on our earnings, whether earned in the office or on the playing fields.

Solo is a piece of work. :stuck_out_tongue:

Nothing she says or does surprises me. She is the most disliked individual in the soccer world, Olympics or otherwise.

And in another upset, the Canadian women beat France 1-0. Woohoo!

So beyond the obvious Simone Biles, who so far is going to get the celebrity status and attendant endorsements after the games? Katie Ledecky certainly has the medals but perhaps not the natural star power. She kind of comes off as a very determined, very focused, and quietly relentless destroyer of all obstacles in her path. She does not have the natural fizzy personality of say Janet Evans or Missy Franklin.

Maya Dirado has a winning personality and has batted for the cycle in medals: gold, silver, and bronze. And she has a smile that is clinically proven to sell breakfast cereal, but so far her only gold medal is in a relay and not an individual event. Plus, she seems to have her future beyond swimming mapped out down to the last inch, so there may not be room in her schedule to make talk show appearances and ads for commercial endorsements.

We knew Aly Raisman from before. She has an appealing persona and already had a reasonably high profile with the public, but lacking the all-round gold I’m not sure her star status is going to go much higher after these games. Something similar can be said for Allison Felix over on the track - her chance for the big double gold is gone, so she’ll probably just maintain the level of star power she already has.

Any one else? Any of the men beyond the perpetual Phelps? Perhaps some new star is will emerge in the second half of the games next week.

Lily King made quite a name for herself with the finger wagging at the Russian swimmer. I was all over that as a fellow Indiana grad, but I read up on the Russian swimmer’s offenses and I’m not so sure she is truly the Evil Empire. She actually lives and trains in the US and both her “drug infractions” were very innocuous, as much as I wanted to believe otherwise. There are frequently 2 sides to things. I love Lily King, though, and she has the personality to be a celebrity.

Let’s see how the marathoners do…

Lauri Hernandez has million dollar eyes!

Laurie Hernandez on the Women’s Gymnastics Team.

Her personality shines through every time she performs. And the gif of her winking at the judges right before she performed her floor routine is all over the Internet. Also, that clip of her saying “You got this” to herself right before she started her balance beam routine.

Another vote for Laurie Hernandez. She not only has the medals, she has the spunk to make a great spokeswoman.

I sort of view Laurie Hernandez as being in the same boat as Maya Dirado. Laurie has the star presence but so far her only gold medal is in a team event, not individual. Allison Felix won gold medals in relays for years, but it wasn’t until she finally broke through and earned an individual gold in London '12 that she became famous with a wider public.

Maybe if Laurie wins the beam in the apparatus competition that will put her in a new category.

I don’t necessarily think she needs to medal anymore (though it’ll certainly help). The public knows who she is (at least anyone paying attention) and that is very important.

She has the sympathy vote because she wasn’t allowed to compete for the all-around. I think that she’ll be a breakout. She’s adorable.

Also, while Lily King certainly has made herself an admired household name, she has done it more as a committed crusader, a righter of wrongs, than as a winsome candidate for the title of “America’s Sweetheart and Chief Product Endorser.”

Lily King could more easily step into the he role of a modern incarnation of the Greek goddess Nemesis - the goddess of righteous vengeance.

really bummed for the soccer team :frowning:

Now Maya has her own gold!

Bummed for women’s soccer, but embarrassed by Hope Solo’s “coward” comments. Bad sportsmanship and kinda dumb, considering the cowards won…

If we’re talking about who may have star power, I will put my tongue firmly in my cheek a,d say the standard bearer from Tongo.

I’m bummed we didn’t get to see the Fiji Rugby final. I bet it was a big deal for the Fijians

The Fiji rugby final was amazing - those guys are fast! Thank goodness for the Canadian channel - they seem to show so much more of the “minor” sports with so much less hype.

Hurray for tiny Singapore! Who saw that one coming…

Nice to see the little countries get their time in the sun, too.

Oh wow.
