They are not taking a breath for 21 seconds! Even I can do that (although I realize I’m doing that sitting in a chair and not swimming as if sharks were biting my toes).
They showed the 50 meter race last night in slow mo. I counted that the winner took 2 breaths. Like BB said, in 50 meters you can afford anaerobic swimming.
When I swam Master’s we did about 4 “no breathers” at the end of practice- 25 yards each. I could do them, but they made me nervous because I had a friend who died at 24 holding his breath underwater at a backyard pool party.
In swimming, technique can make a huge difference:
I remember watching Misty’s swim in Sydney and thinking how short she was compared to the other swimmers.
yes, that is why these swimmers win by 4/100ths of a second … all those little technique adjustments really do count!
I don’t think there is any doubt about the Ryan Lochte robbery – he was with 3 other swimmers. My guess is the taxi driver was in on it (why not stop for gas before your next fare)??
I read that fake police pulled over the cab. Not sure which story is correct. Luckily no medals stolen.
I’m glad none of the athletes were physically harmed. Scary!
Maybe it was REAL police who pulled over the cab.
To recap the swimming, I have not been as excited about the US swim team since Sydney! So many amazing stories. The three-way silver medal tie in the 100 fly was epic. I think even Phelps appreciates that this is way more newsworthy than him winning the gold.
Sharing the podium with his biggest rivals and letting a kid who worshiped Phelps as the swim god climb on the top step was the best finish one could have imagined, IMO. The relays were the final fireworks!!!
The 100 fly was poetic.
Does MP retire from the Olympics because he does not want to bore people? Or does he not want to defeated?
Maybe his body is saying, “enough.” It’s nice to go out on top. When you’re in a 3-way tie for 2nd in one of your signature events, I’m sure you can tell the competition s heating up and you are sharing more limelight than when you were in a class of your own, smashing records left and right.
Somebody will hire him as a coach.
Maybe he is retiring because he has worked is ass off and accomplished more than any other Olympian in history and is leaving on his own terms, having known he gave it everything he had (unlike London). I think anyone who is bored watching him swim is in a very small minority, and probably 0% of the swimming world is bored by him. And he for sure is not afraid to be defeated, he is an admirable champion and fine competitor who has lost plenty of times. I doubt you could find one swimmer he has ever competed against who does not fully respect him.
I’m with you BunsenBurner, I thoroughly enjoyed every single race, and am sad the swimming is over.
The real police investigated the Lochte robbery; there seems to be no doubt that the robbers were pretending to be cops. I think the robbery is well-established. His telling of the circumstances is chilling, including a gun pointed right at his face.
OMG South Africa, the young man and his 74 y o coach! Van nelken. I can’t wait for an interview with this coach and young man.
Anyone know how I can watch replays of the Women’s gymnastics events via Apple TV? I’ve tried accessing NBCSports Replays, and it says to go online and enter an activation code. Not clear where to do this on the NBCSports.com website…
For a Roku it was something like NBC Sports | Activate your device or something like that
At least short term, Phelps is going to be busy:

Just turned on the TV to see the world’s fastest man doing his thing. Thank goodness, for once there is no beach volleyball!!!
Phew. He was slower than molasses peeling off the starting blocks yesterday.
Glad to see him win.
