Rio Olympics 2016 - schedule and discussion

Loving the emotional Brazilian men too.

That was a great moment for the Brazilians-can’t help but be happy for them.

Yea! More beach volleyball!

Van Niekerk, 43.03, in lane 8. The mind boggles. What an incredible, incredible run. I broke 50 sec. in the 400 twice. Raced with a guy who got to the low 48s, and I was in awe of his speed. 43.03 from Van Niekerk, though. I got chills.

In a NBC video, former NFLer Dhani Jones mentioned that badminton is the second fastest sport in the world, but is the fastest sport in Rio…

Does anyone know what is the fastest sport in the world that he was talking about?

Jai Alai

Jai Alai, how can I forget those “banana peels”.

In both sports the propelled objects are clocked at over 300 km/hr. A quick check shows that Fu Hai Feng (men’s double gold medalist in London) was once clocked at 332 km/hr back in 2005.

Sometimes reality is stranger than fiction.

Fabulous WR by Van Niekerk in the men’s 400M last night. Although I was very frustrated with the NBC announcers. For the longest time they kept gushing over what a terrific time he ran without telling us what it was. I think they may have mumbled it right after the finish, but if they did I didn’t catch it in all the cheering. But then they went on and on without ever saying the time, or showing us the trackside timer, or putting the time up on a banner on the screen. Nothing. This left me wondering whether he had broken 43 seconds.

The only word I have for synchronised swimming is: SCARY. The noseclips and homicidal clown makeup just creep me out.

Synchronized makes me giggle. I’m watching equestrian dressage right now. It makes me giggle too as they prance around to the very dramatic and bizarre montage of music. :-j

Rio was no doubt hoping that all the publicity, the gorgeous aerial photos of the mountains and the beach would bring tourists to Rio after the Olympics.

Instead, the news off the playing fields has been about Olympic athletes being robbed and beaten up.

I, for one, am much less likely to ever visit Rio than I was before.

One of my college roommates did synchronized swimming in high school, so I’ve always watched it trying to imagine her.

We have good friends who find all the excuses they can to spend time in Brazil. He took a sabbatical semester there, and their daughter is doing post-doc work in a lab. They feel if you are sensible it’s not that unsafe.

Laurie Hernandez is so adorable! I just want to hug her.

She is a doll! As I said earlier, she looks like Skipper, Barbie’s cute little sister.

Just now I had to eat a little box of Junior Mints and half a small bag of M&Ms to get through beam. When my D was competing, I thought that they should have a tank of nitrous oxide for the moms to inhale when their Ds were on beam.

@abasket - I’m a dope; in previous post I mentioned Meb; meant to say Mo Farah (who won the 1500). duh

I agree, Laurie Hernandez, such a cutie. My heart is breaking for Gabby Douglas. I think she has handled this bit of adversity (barely making the team, not competing in all-around as reigning Olympic champion, and now messing up a bit in her one individual medal event) with grace and dignity. Sad to hear she is being picked on by the social media (why read that stuff, though? ugh. It’s only the idiots who post negative stuff anyway). She will always be a champion.

I wasn’t too thrilled with the Brazil crowd wildly applauding and cheering the final American male gymnast’s mistakes in the middle of his floor routine last night (because the Brazil athletes would win 2 medals instead of one if he messed up) and worse, loudly chanting the Brazil gymnast’s name while the American was still in the middle of his routine (and the guys don’t perform to music so you could really hear it).

I understand they are the home country, and it’s a big deal for Brazilian gymnasts to be winning medals and they were beyond excited, but don’t real fans of the sport have more respect for the athletes than that? I can’t imagine an American crowd doing that, I really can’t.

They are pro’s, they can handle any real noise or “media” noise. They have learned how to loose and how to handle all the talks about them at the very tender age, even those who never reached that high level, this is part of being in sport. Apparently, they can handle even gun to their head, thank goodness, nobody was killed. I hope that it is the last one in this region, everybody who ever been there are saying that it is a very dangerous place, it was an irresponsible pick for Olympics.

yes, I am sure you are right, he didn’t look very rattled. It was mostly the rudeness of the crowd I was commenting on.

That Ryan Lochte situation is totally scary. A gun right to his forehead. I agree with you, MiamiDAP that overall Rio was a very, very poor choice. (But apparently they satisfied the crazy, power-crazed, money hungry IOC members… reference to previous comments I and others made on this thread about Olympic corruption).
