Remember him for the good times he provided in shows like McHale’s Navy and movies like the dirty dozen.

Saw that on my computer earlier. Let’s show our age. Do you remember him from Gilligan’s Island or McHale’s Navy? Or his movie roles?

Posiedan Adventure with Shelly Winters, another late great.

For the record–he was not on Gilligans Island. Watch his academy award performance in “Marty”. He was a friend of my H.He tended to play gruff rather goofy characters but in point of fact was a patient, sweet, gentle, intelligent man.

Mermaid man… :-/

omg, musicamusica. I had a total brain f*rt :o

I was wracking my brain trying to explain who Ernest Borgnine was to my kids. McHale’s Navy?: not on Nick at Night. “Marty”?: Never heard of it. Beat Frank Sinatra to death in “From Here to Eternity”?:crickets… And they are usually so good at knowing cultural references from the past,so I felt defeated. Until a google search revealed that Ernest was the voice of “Mermaid Man” from “Spongebob Squarepants”!!! So I guess it’s me that doesn’t know all the cool things…RIP to a talented and diverse actor.

“MARTY” a great scene

[Marty - YouTube](<a href=“Marty - YouTube”>Marty - YouTube)

He had a great career.

I enjoyed watching him in McHale’s Navy, and of course, Marty.

RIP.

mm–love that scene, and the movie, Marty.

And when he won the Academy Award that year, he beat Sinatra,Cagney,Spencer Tracy and James Dean.Wow!!!

First Andy Griffith, now Borgnine…since these things usually happen in threes, I’d be real nervous if I were a 60’s sitcom actor…

I liked him in The Dirty Dozen

My kids would know him from a favority funny movie, “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World”. My that movie had a lot of stars!

Two other memorable roles of Borgnine’s that are neglected are ‘Pay or Die’ and ‘Spike of Bensonhurst.’ The latter was a 1990s comedy in which Borgnine was a sensitive New York mob boss.

Also, a few years ago Borgnine told two stories about his personal life during a TV interview which were hilarious. First, he described the end of his comically brief marriage to Ethel Merman (he essentially blamed his mother-in-law). In the second story he responded to a question about how he was able to live so long and be vigorous and healthy. Well, his explanation was so risque it had me falling out of my chair. It cannot be repeated here on a family website.
