Not to quibble too much, but I don’t think Goffin had anything to do with “You’ve Got A Friend.” Long before Taylor recorded it, the song was a big hit on King’s Tapestry album, which was kind of her declaration of independence from Goffin a few years after their divorce.

Of course, the fact that he didn’t collaborate on that song takes nothing away from the many songs for which he receives and deserves credit, including perennials like “(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?,” “Up On The Roof,” and “Saving All My Love For You.”

His death will make seeing the musical “Beautiful” (which I highly recommend to King fans) a more poignant experience than the writers ever expected. The relationship between King and Goffin is the crux of the show.

Maybe Rolling Stone isnt the most reputable source… but they claim he did cowrite it.
Will You love me Tomorow" was the Shirelles breakout song, which he cowrote with Carole, I think.

As it happened, I saw the part of the Tony awards with Carole King the other night and was inspired to dig out the 20 year old (at least) song book with the songs from the Tapestry album. “You’ve got a friend” credits “words and music by Carole King”. She was also the sole songwriter on “I feel the earth move”, “so far away”, “home again”, “way over yonder”, “beautiful”, and “tapestry”, Goffin was a cowriter on “you make me feel like a natural woman”(also jerry wexler), “smackwater jack”, and “will you love me tomorrow” . For completeness, Toni Stern wrote the lyrics to “its too late” and cowrote words and music for “where you lead”…
