RIP James Garner

Sad to learn of his death. I loved him in everything he ever acted in, but Rockford Files was my favorite.

Alan Sepinwall wrote a very eloquent tribute this morning.

Thanks for the link to the wonderful tribute, patsmom. I had a mad crush on James Garner when the original “Maverick” was rerun in the mid-1960s. And I loved his movies, too. He had a gift for making charm and wit look easy.

I recently re-watched “Victor/Victoria,” in which he was just perfect.

I loved him so much in The Americanization of Emily.

Support Your Local Sheriff!
Nuff said.

I loved James Garner in “The Great Escape” and for years had a huge crush on him. In my 20s I had a seconds-long encounter with him at an airport; he was gracious to everyone there. My older male coworker was surprised that I got a bit flustered since I’d cultivated a pretty hard shell at work for self-preservation.

The tribute Patsmon linked captures Mr. Garner perfectly.

@Silpat - I’m jealous of that chance encounter!

Loved Rockford Files…but also loved everything he was in.

Thanks for sharing. We have a station that reruns Rockford Files and I still enjoy James Garner’s acting.

Oh gosh, I had such a crush…we watched Rockford faithfully.

So did I , have an autographed photo from a friend who met him. Such a nice man. His memoir is very good, not trashy, but an honest account of his life, his movies, shows, etc. I respected him even more after reading it.

I was disappointed the obit on the national news (CBS?) didn’t mention his driving. He began as a stunt driver and was one of the best. All those scenes of him driving in Rockford Files were motivated by his love of cars and driving. And of course he did all his driving stunts.

He seemed a genuinely nice man. I am sorry to hear of his passing.

I i remember rhe Skin Game with Louis Gossett jr.
I didnt realize he did his own driving, as he was better than the stunt drivers!

The obits didn’t mention his Korean war service, either. My H records Maverick on Encore Westerns every day and watches it in the evening - I wonder if they’ll do a tribute.

I went to an OU - UT game in Dallas one year, and he was standing on OU’s sideline, close to where I was sitting. It was so cool! I even forgave him for rooting for the enemy. I remember thinking he was “so old” - doing the math, he was probably 55 or 56 at the time!

How could I have forgotten this?
Mike McCready( Pearl Jam) named one of his bands “The Rockfords”, cause they loved the Rockord files so much.
<a href=“The Rockfords - Wikipedia”>http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rockfords

Don’t forget Detective Lew Harper or the skirt-chasing former President in ‘My Fellow Americans.’ And anyone remember his voice-over commercials for the U.S. beef industry in the 1980s? They were hilarious. To paraphrase; ‘vegetables on your dinner plate? I do believe that’s why someone invented salad! Beef; it’s whats for dinner!’

Mr. Garner also did those Polaroid commercials with Mariette Hartley that had folks wondering if they were married, as they had such great chemistry together.

Yes, they did. I loved the shirt Mariette had with “I’m not Mrs.James Garner” on it. : ) She said even then some seemed to think she still was.
