RIP Kate Spade

How terribly sad. :frowning: I loved her designs.

Why do they have to reveal the contents of her note?

@Classof2015, Who has said they have to?

Incredibly sad. Loved her work.

@Nrdsb4 let me clarify: I didn’t mean “have to” as in they are required to; I meant “why do people do these things”. I’m not sure who did the revealing (her husband? some reporter?). I just don’t see the need to do this.

@Classof2015, I didn’t realize that anyone had revealed the contents of the note, only that there was one.

It was in the NY Post’s coverage:
https://pagesix.com/2018/06/05/kate-spades-suicide-note-had-a-message-for-her-daughter/?_ga=2.105470080.2053303628.1528121858-2004094866.1515516342

I’m thinking did the husband leak this to somehow help the poor girl? Or were the contents discovered by someone else? Just heartbreaking.

Sounds to me like it was marital difficulties which prompted this. I say this because it’s been leaked that the note tells her daughter the suicide had nothing to do with her AND Andy Spade was home in the same house when she killed herself but he did not discover the body or call the police–a housekeeper did.

Yep, updated to add that some of the sleazier tabloids say her husband was searching for a new apartment for himself and that the note said “Bea (her daughter), I have always loved you. This is not your fault–ask Daddy!”

How does one hang themself from a door handle?

Prayers for Bea

Honestly, so selfish…and I understand that i’m not being understanding here…but why would you do this to a child? “Ask daddy.” Really? And now you have a young girl whose life is forever changed.

Heartbreaking. My oldest brother committed suicide, as did my husband’s father. People are not in their right minds when they do something like this - I don’t think we should judge.

I agree with @LucieTheLakie . No one knows what is in a person’s mind at this time. It’s terribly sad.

It’s terribly sad. I don’t believe that she deliberately did this to her daughter, who she clearly loved dearly. People who are suicidal don’t think with clarity. She may have thought she was doing her D a favor by bowing out of a possible custody battle. It did give me a start when I saw the girl’s name. My grandmother of the same name killed herself when I was 9, but I wasn’t told her death was by her own hand until I was an adult. I am grateful that I was shielded from that news and didn’t have to process it with a child’s mind.

Yes, that note was cruel to her daughter. I can’t imagine what that poor girl will go through.

Thank you for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number. I’ve posted it on all my social media. It’s a reminder we should all share.

On another sort of related note - I think the new ads featuring Michael Phelps are very well done, very important and very thought provoking. As with Kate Spade, with Phelps you would never have known that someone who seemed so successful and connected can feel empty and dislocated inside.

I was a first year grad student in clinical, psych, when I attended a group meeting. An older student spoke of having suicidal feelings for years. She said deciding to have children was major to her, as that meant she could never commitmsuicide. I can’t recall her name, but I never forgot the message.

Kate must have been in awful, pain to do what she did.

@techmom99 it is pretty well known in the swimming world that quite a few elite swimmers have severe depression (drug abuse) issues, Phelps is well-known, so is Missy franklin, then there are several Australian top swimmers like Ian Thorpe. And I bet it is not an uncommon phenomenon among elite athletes who passed their prime.

I really do hope the reports of the content of the note are not correct, in particular, “ask daddy.” The daughter now only has one parent left, the dad. She may end up blaming him for her mother’s death. The relationship could really suffer unless they get help processing this.
