But the music lives on.

I had the priviledge of seeing Levon Helm and the Band twice. The first time at Watkins Glen on July 27 and 28 on a triple bill with the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers.

The second time was on January 6th, 1974 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia on the second stop of Bob Dylan’s first tour in eight years.

Both were grueling. Watkins Glen was an ordeal. And we drove from Williamstown, MA to Philly and back after the concert for the second one.

It certainly makes me stop and reflect every time another one of my favorites dies from nicotine addiction.

Gotta remember him at his best:

I saw The Band in Cleveland, Ohio around 1970. Good times…

His solo stuff was amazing too (if you like gritty folk/country/roots music). I listened to “Dirt Farmer” on my commute this morning. Amazing.

I’ll see if he puts up a clip later.

I met Levon years ago, when he was again performing as The Band without Robbie Robertson. He said everyone mispronounced his name. It was supposed to be Le-von with accent on the second syllable. So I remember him that way.

Not an aficianado of the The Band but enjoyed ‘The Last Waltz.’ ‘The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down’ is one of my favorite mildly political tunes.

I was also at the Watkins Glen Festival. The local paper printed a 25th or 30th anniversary edition filled with photos and information about the concert. I wish I could find it as it was very interesting.

“The Band Live At Watkins Glen” is available on CD, and incudes the “No Rain Chant.”
