RIP Margaret Thatcher

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatched has died. She was an amazing woman.

[Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher is dead | Mail Online](<a href=“Margaret Thatcher dead: Former prime minister dies at 87 after a massive stroke | Daily Mail Online”>Margaret Thatcher dead: Former prime minister dies at 87 after a massive stroke | Daily Mail Online)

Can’t say I’ll be mourning her passing, truth be told. Upon hearing the news, my grandmother came out with “oh good, it was about time too”! Reaction in many sections of the British media has not been entirely in her favour either - and with good reason.

Boomting, my friends in the UK feel the same as your grandmother.

She did good and bad things, perhaps more bad that had greater lasting effects and advocated questionable things…

Ding, dong, the witch is dead.

Lots of bitter comments in The Guardian.

Wow, dd and I just watched Iron Lady Saturday.

I have sympathy for her family (well, except maybe for the son who helped finance a coup attempt in Equatorial Guinea), but as I heard (read) someone else say - the world is a better place without her in it, or at the very least a kinder place.

John Fugelsang had this to say: “I wanted to find an appropriate way to honor Margaret Thatcher today so took milk away from poor children whilst calling Nelson Mandela a terrorist.”

I dislike when the press only present the good side of a departed leader. Maggie along with Reagan were staunch supporters of Apartheid with their policy of “Constructive Engagement.” The policy was abhorrent and needs to be included with their legacy.

Strange coincidence that both Mrs. Thatcher and President Reagan suffered from dementia. Not too many world leaders from western countries seem to develop full blown dementia.

How ironic that the west won the cold war, yet Gorbachev survives both Reagan and Thatcher. I guess there’s winning, and then there’s winning

Personally I’m all in favour of privatising her funeral, putting it out to tender and accepting the lowest bid. After all, it’s what she would have wanted.

That said, I’m sure the ex-mining communities in South Wales will put in the lowest bid - the grave’s already dug, even if the budget doesn’t stretch to backfilling it…

my husband is irish/ no love lost there she was no friend of ireland

Boomting,

Love your post.

Boomting, your grandmothers words do some good for my heart. I had to remain silent while my Scottish grandmother sang her praises, though she is now long gone.

It could be just be 80’s nostalgia, but I have a lot of respect for her.
May she rest in peace.

BTW, most people will suffer some form of dementia–if they live long enough.

Nope, nope, nope, nope.

Being a woman doesn’t excuse being a despicable human being.

Boomting, I’m with you here. My family (from the north of England) have been saving a bottle of champagne for this day…now we can open it!

Another great John Fugelsong quote -

Wow, there’s some seriously bitter people here.

She was instrumental in the fall of communism and did tremendous good for her country’s economy. If she were a liberal, you would put up a monument to her. But she’s a conservative, so you have to glory in her death (as if you’re not going to die, too). So pathetic.

(One day, someone will explain why middle-aged women hate conservative, successful, ladylike, ballsy women so much. Or maybe I just answered my own question. :D)

quote

Only when she’s also a mean, vindictive, selfish and deluded narcissist.

Absolutely right. You need to summer in Hyannisport to gain that kind of a pass.
