(CNN)Omar Sharif, the dashing actor whose acting career included star turns in “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Doctor Zhivago,” died Friday. He was 83.
He was a international champion Bridge player too, wasn’t he? Never saw him in Doctor Zhivago but liked him in Lawrence of Arabia.
I liked him because he always had dignity from anything I read about him, but he also never seemed to take himself that seriously, in more than a few movies he did roles parodying the kind of roles he had played in movies and so forth, and in interviews he seemed to poke fun at the image of him as this larger than life character or something.
He was wonderful in LoA, and my mom especially just loved him in Dr Zhivago.
He was in many films, along with the Funny Girl & Funny Lady movies with Barbra Streisand, Monsieur Ibrahim also did well in 2003, with Isabel Adjani.

My dad played in a Bridge tournament where Omar S was a player. He was a Master.
I think of him mostly for his role as Nicky Arnstein in Funny Girl.
No matter what he played, he played a gentleman. RIP.
I can’t count how many times I have seen Dr, Zhivago…one of my favorites.
Do you remember the controversy over Sharif, and Egyptian, playing opposite Barbra Steisand right after the 6 day war with Israel?

I always liked him. Especially in Dr. Zhivago.
One of my all-time favorites…love love Dr Zhivago, love the scene where you first see him in Lawrence of Arabia and what can you say about Funny Girl - so charming…
My favourite Sharif movie was Mackenna’s Gold, which I saw while in HS, but nobody I’ve spoken to here seems to have heard of it or the “Old Turkey Buzzard” song.
Dr. Zhivago is one of my favorite movies. His obit said that he was always broke because he was addicted to gambling. Sad.
