RISD vs NYU Tisch

Need some suggestions on how to choose from RISD and NYU Tisch (WL). Need to make decision before May 19th.

Both are good school and are expensive.
RISD - graphic design
NYU Tisch - film
From career point of view, which one has a better job market.

Likely graphic design but that should be less an issue - vs. which do you want to study? They’re not the same thing.

Did you deposit at RISD by May 1, and now are offered a spot at Tisch?

I agree with tsbna…which subject do you want to study? What are your career goals?

Are they both affordable?

Yeah, we deposit RISD by May 1st. Now , NYU waiting list is coming. Both are similar cost. My son likes both graphic design and Theater life.

I would guess graphic design.

In film production, few will make it but those who do can be very successful.

I think of film as a career that one should pursue only if it is a singular passion. It’s a tough field to break into, and if your son were strongly focused on film, you probably wouldn’t be here asking this question. Liking “theater life” is not sufficient reason to pursue a specialized film major, IMHO.

One thing to look into is whether there are any film electives at RISD that would be open to a graphic design major.

Between RISD and Brown, there is plenty of theater activity available on an extracurricular basis. There’s also a student-run film production club at Brown that would, I believe, be open to him as well. https://brownmotionpictures.org/

IMHO, the graphic design degree is more versatile, and if he were driven to pursue film at this point in his life, you would know it.

You’ve got to really, really love your medium to make it through at RISD. It isn’t a “oh, let’s fool around making pretty designs” kind of place. Students work hard- with a very single-minded focus, with every minute of spare time spent in the studio and working on projects. I would conjecture that a kid who isn’t sure he loves graphic design and wants to focus on it probably isn’t ready for the intensity of RISD. It is both intensely broad in terms of studying art, and very deep in terms of pre-professional/studio training for working artists.

Does your son have any options which offer a broader/less intense choice? If he is at RISD and wants to change focus- there aren’t many options that are good for a generalist artsy kid. At NYU would he have the option of switching into Arts and Sciences? Where are his actual interests-- your post makes it seems like he’s deciding between history and poli sci and that’s not really accurate for these two disciplines at these two institutions. Both will be a real slog unless he’s truly in love with the subject AND with the time commitment.
