Rise in Thyroid Cancer

It seems strange to me, that in my almost 46 years on the planet, I have only heard of one person in my extended friend circle, that had Thyroid cancer. And suddenly, in the last six months, four of my close friends have been diagnosed. 3 forty-somethings, and one of their very young adult daughters.

News reports say that Thyroid Cancer is on the rise, so what is the cause? Environmental? Too many CT scans? The dentist and docs claim the levels of radiation in dental/mammograms are minimal, but…

Truly concerning.

I don’t know the answer. My 26 year old daughter was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last March. She is now doing well after surgery in May and radioactive iodine treatment in July. She is just trying to deal with getting her thyroid medication fine tuned.

Fall out from nuclear testing back in the 40’s…

Okay, maybe this is a wacko idea, but do cell phones have anything to do with it? Another thing that concerns me lately is the amount of chemicals (fire retardants esp.) in the furniture we sit on and sleep on. I have no idea if there is any connection, but I wonder . . .

My endocrinologist says the increase is probably due to two factors: some increased incidence of thyroid cancer but also an increase in diagnosis - in other words, the cases were always there, it’s just that we find those thryoid cancers now, where in prior times they weren’t detected. Better technology = better diagnostic tools = more cancer diagnoses.

I think it’s due to the fire retardant chemicals used in furniture. Studies have shown that they actually get absorbed by the body just from sitting on the furnituer (this is true for both people and pets). Many of these chemicals are very toxic and harmful. There is a U.S. Senator trying to change the laws when it comes to fire retardants in furniture, but it’s an uphill battle.
