Rising Freshman Wanting to Make Friends at the University Gym

Hi. I will be a freshman in college this fall at the University of Maryland College Park.

I will be commuting and not living in a dorm. I will be around town all summer.

I go to the college gym and pool everyday.

How do I make friends at the gym? How do I make friends with upperclassmen who are 19 to 30 years old at the gym and pool?

How do I look older?

I am trying to grow facial hair to look older.

I have scraggly facial hair. Unfortunately, I am also having pimple breakouts due to growing facial hair.

This causes me to look young for my age. (I am 18 years old). How do I fix my problem?

I want to look older so I have a better chance of making friends with upperclassmen.

I have been lonely this summer sometimes.

Many thanks

You’re trying to grow facial hair when you already know you don’t look good with it, in an attempt to befriend upperclassmen? That seems like a poorly thought out plan.

Does your university have a Facebook group? I’ve seen some people post in an attempt to find a work out buddy so as to get motivated. You might also consider joining an actual fitness class at your school. Plenty of students socialize there.

Why do you want to make friends specifically with upperclassmen? To be cool? Why don’t you aim to make friends with similar interests instead of trying to make yourself something you aren’t with poorly executed facial hair?

How do you normally make friends?

You don’t need a beard to make friends. If you’re only interested in older friends for the alcohol benefits, then neither they nor you are a friend. Rather, you’re just using them.

Thank you very much whenhen.

Cameraphone. No no you don’t understand. I do not drink alcohol. (Personal reasons). I will not use upperclassmen. I guess I could join clubs or register for a class in the gym to make friends.

I decided to close this discussion. You guys answered my questions. Thank you very much for your time. (I am not quite sure how to close the discussion).

You can’t close discussions, but in that case, likely no one will respond anyway.

Still a relevant topic.

Don’t just go up to people and bother them, especially if they have headphones in. Maybe if you see some of the gym regulars around campus talk to them or something.
